Continue to provide mentoring support to Victorian<br />

regional botanic gardens and play a leading role in<br />

the development and activities of <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong><br />

Australia and New Zealand Inc.<br />

In conjunction with Playgroup Victoria, the Marketing<br />

and Communications and RBG Melbourne Public<br />

Programs branches organised a Nature Play Day at<br />

The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden on<br />

15 March <strong>2011</strong>. This inaugural event was attended<br />

by 471 parents and children. The event showcased<br />

the Children’s Garden to one of our key audiences<br />

– parents of young children – with many attendees<br />

visiting the Children’s Garden for the first time.<br />

In February <strong>2011</strong>, the Marketing and<br />

Communications branch and the RBG Cranbourne<br />

Horticulture branch organised a special event for the<br />

Horticultural Media Association (HMA) to provide an<br />

on-site update about the Australian Garden Stage 2.<br />

The event was attended by 65 HMA me<strong>mb</strong>ers and<br />

included presentations by the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong><br />

<strong>Gardens</strong>’ Director and Chief Executive and the<br />

Manager, Horticulture, at RBG Cranbourne.<br />

Two Horticulture Technicians from RBG Cranbourne<br />

attended the International Plant Propagators Society<br />

(IPPS) conference in Sydney where ideas were<br />

shared about propagation, industry products and<br />

Myrtle Rust.<br />

Staff continued to work with Conservation<br />

Volunteers Australia to undertake educational<br />

conservation works, such as island restoration,<br />

at RBG Melbourne.<br />

RBG Melbourne hosted a French student for an<br />

industry work placement with the Horticulture<br />

branch from 28 March to 20 May <strong>2011</strong>. The student<br />

was from the National School of Higher Studies in<br />

Nature and Landscape Architecture in Blois, France.<br />

The aim of her placement was to work with and<br />

learn about Australian plants as a core element in<br />

her curriculum.<br />

The Public Programs branch contributed to<br />

development of a new national professional<br />

development network for botanic gardens staff<br />

engaged in public programs, education, visitor<br />

services and volunteers. The <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong><br />

Education Network (Australia and New Zealand)<br />

(BGEN) was launched in October <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
