Overview<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> the lesson is to enable students to express what they believe<br />

they know about sleep and to encourage them to explore the topic further.<br />

Students also evaluate entries in their sleep diary.<br />

Major Concepts<br />

Sleep is an essential, biologically motivated behavior. Adequate amounts <strong>of</strong><br />

sleep are necessary for normal motor and cognitive functions. Sleep is<br />

required for survival, and the drive to sleep is intense.<br />

Objectives<br />

After completing this lesson, students will<br />

• understand that sleep is a behavior,<br />

• become more aware <strong>of</strong> their own sleep/wake cycles, and<br />

• be able to develop and test hypotheses relating to sleep using data<br />

in the sleep diary.<br />
