It can be seen that the result of the OLR is the same if there is the same value of temperature on the cloud top, no matter if the vertical distributions of the cloud cover are quite different or whether or not convection exists. From Fig. 2 it is shown that, along the equator, positive OLR regions are associated with clear sky, and they are located on both sides of the negative OLR region, which has a zonal width of about 6000-7000 km. Thus a large-scale horizontal temperature gradient must be developed between the large-scale cloud field and clear regions due to differential radiative heating. If most large scale clouds have vertical structure as shown in Fig. 3(b) or 3(c), based on the hydrostatic equation, the vertical and horizontal configurations of the differential radiative heating will result in a large-scale geopotential perturbation (Fig. 4) on the isobaric surface in the middle level of the cloud indicated by NN' in Fig. 1. The quasi-geos trophic motion is a good approximation for the planetary scale motion in the equatorial atmosphere. The quasi-geostrophic motion in the equatorial atmosphere was first investigated by Matsuno (1966) as shown in Fig. 4. Owing to the quasi-geostrophic motion, a zonal westerly current in the middle level of the cloud must be developed during which high geopotential perturbations are produced. Fig. 4 can be used as a schematic diagram for the geopotential height and wind field on the isobaric surface in the middle level of the cloud. This zonal current would generate the movement of large-scale clouds eastward in the equatorial region. The large-scale moving clouds are referred to in this paper as the cloud wave.
