A Quasi-Diabatic Geostrophic Model for the Tropical Planetary Scale Low Frequency Motion In order to illustrate the dynamic essentials of the low-frequency planetary-scale motion in the tropical atmosphere, it is necessary to use simplified dynamic and thermodynamic equations. It is well known that the basic structure of the extratropical atmosphere may be largely described by the quasi-geostrophic theory. However, such a theory has not emerged for the tropical atmosphere. Two simplified approaches have been made to understand the physical processes that dominate the tropical atmosphere. The first approach was originally proposed by Charney (1963) by using the comparative scale analysis. The second approach followed the classical tidal theory. Matsuno (1966) and Longuet-Higgins (1968) were among the first to realize the importance of the tidal equations. In the present paper, we shall demonstrate that these two approaches can be unified based on the scale analysis for lowfrequency motion in the tropical atmosphere.
