Interoperability”). 763 The major goal of the BTP is thus to establish a shared <strong>in</strong>frastructure for
humanities research by develop<strong>in</strong>g web services, <strong>in</strong>teroperable collections, and partnerships that meet
the needs of both researchers and <strong>in</strong>stitutions.
The BTP builds off of the Bamboo Plann<strong>in</strong>g project that concluded <strong>in</strong> 2010, and as part of this project
six workshops were held between the fall of 2008 and the summer of 2010, with over 600 <strong>in</strong>dividuals
participat<strong>in</strong>g from a number of organizations and <strong>in</strong>stitutions. 764 Workshop One, entitled “The
Plann<strong>in</strong>g Process & Understand<strong>in</strong>g Arts and Humanities Scholarship,” <strong>in</strong>volved four separate
workshops at different locations where scholars <strong>in</strong> the arts and humanities held dialogues with
<strong>in</strong>formation technologists to understand the scholarship practices of these discipl<strong>in</strong>es and their future
directions. One major goal of these workshops was to develop a “high-level list of scholarly practices
related to arts and humanities,” and this list, as well as all workshop notes, documents, and other
materials, was placed onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the project plann<strong>in</strong>g wiki. 765
Workshop Two built off the results of the first series of workshops and exam<strong>in</strong>ed possible future
directions for Project Bamboo, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g advocacy and leadership; education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong>stitutional
partnerships and support; scholarly network<strong>in</strong>g; standards and best practices; “tools & content
partners”; and a shared service framework. At the end of this workshop, seven work<strong>in</strong>g groups 766 were
formed around these themes, with the addition of an eighth work<strong>in</strong>g group entitled “Stories,”
eventually renamed, “Scholarly Narratives,” which was chartered to “collect narratives and/or
illustrative examples on behalf of all Bamboo work<strong>in</strong>g groups that express particular aspects of
scholarship, scholarly workflow, research, and/or teach<strong>in</strong>g that are or could be facilitated by
technology.” Each work<strong>in</strong>g group had a separate wiki page that allowed group members to collaborate,
post documents, and provide other <strong>in</strong>formation. Work<strong>in</strong>g groups were also charged with creat<strong>in</strong>g
demonstrators 767 “to support the discussion and analysis activities of the work<strong>in</strong>g groups, and to reflect
and test the results of that discussion and analysis.” 768 Initial progress of the work<strong>in</strong>g groups was
reported at Workshop Three, and a “straw consortial model” for the project was <strong>in</strong>troduced. The fourth
workshop <strong>in</strong>volved the discussion of a draft program document; and the fifth workshop f<strong>in</strong>alized plans
for the implementation proposal to the Mellon Foundation that was successfully funded.
The amount of data generated from these workshops and found on the project plann<strong>in</strong>g wiki was quite
extensive, and the Bamboo Project synthesized these data <strong>in</strong>to four reports that are available on the
website 769 <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the plann<strong>in</strong>g project’s f<strong>in</strong>al report, a scholarly practices report that <strong>in</strong>cludes a
“distillation of the themes of scholarly practice that emerged <strong>in</strong> Workshop 1,” a scholarly narratives
report that describes scholars perception of their work and how it may change with the use of
technology, and a f<strong>in</strong>al demonstrator report. In addition, the project has also created a “Themes
Database” 770 that conta<strong>in</strong>s quotes from participants <strong>in</strong> the Bamboo Plann<strong>in</strong>g Project’s Workshop 1
series that have been “analyzed and organized <strong>in</strong>to themes of scholarly practice” with thirteen major
themes hav<strong>in</strong>g been identified <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: annotat<strong>in</strong>g/document<strong>in</strong>g, “citation, credit, peer review,”
