BYRON SHIRE COUNCIL ORDINARY MEETING 9 MAY 2013 (10) 5 10 15 20 25 Mr Richard Turner, Founder, Zen Home Energy Systems, shared his company’s successes in rolling out Affordable Community Solar Programs. The solar take up in host town Victor Harbor was around 40%! This is clearly a system from which we could learn, using our own local providers. Victor Harbor provided a few ideas itself. We viewed an example of a hybrid solar and wind light, which has the capacity to be an electric car-refuelling stop also. Lastly, in Victor Harbor, we saw ‘Beyond Display Village,’ an award winning sustainable development, the most energy efficient housing development in Australia and a great example for our developers to aspire. The Beyond team have produced easy to understand design guidelines covering: orientation to winter sun, optimal placement of windows for light, winter warmth and summer breezes, external shading for summer coolness, zero overshadowing from neighbours, indoor/outdoor living area linkage, solar hot water supply, solar energy supply, thermal mass for heat conduction, materials with lowest toxicity and lowest environmental impact and rainwater harvesting. BYRON SHIRE COUNCIL ORDINARY MEETING 9 MAY 2013 (11) Part of the retirement home component of the development 5 A horse drawn tram was in use, making links to our possible park and ride along the train line obvious, as was travelling on a volunteer run, two-carriage train service for holiday periods and on weekends. Trains operate on up to 140 days a year and are manned by volunteers from the Australian Railways Historical Society, who are also responsible for maintenance of the rail line and the heritage locomotives and carriages.
