COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

MUS341 Instrumental Techniques: Brass credits: 2<br />

Students gain fundamental skills for playing brass instruments. Application to development<br />

of school instrumental programs.<br />

MUS342 Instrumental Techniques: Woodwinds credits: 2<br />

Fundamental knowledge and skills for playing and teaching woodwind instruments.<br />

Application to development of school instrumental programs.<br />

MUS345 Hymn Adaptations I credits: 2<br />

Students will explore and compose various hymn accompaniment formats through understanding<br />

and adapting jazz influenced musical styles. These hymn accompaniment adaptations<br />

will be useful in a variety of worship settings.<br />

MUS346 Hymn Adaptations II credits: 2<br />

Students will explore and compose various hymn accompaniment formats and scored liturgy<br />

through further understanding and adapting jazz influenced musical styles (e.g. Bossa<br />

Nova, Samba, Reggae). Development of arranging skills for "contemporary" church music<br />

ensembles will be explored. PREREQUISITES: MUS339 or MUS345<br />

MUS347 Hymn Adaptations III credits: 2<br />

Students will explore and compose various hymn accompaniment formats through further<br />

understanding and adapting jazz influenced musical styles. Development of arranging skills<br />

for large "contemporary" ensembles using learned musical styles from Hymn Adaptations I<br />

and II will be explored. PREREQUISITES: MUS346<br />

MUS351 Introduction to MIDI Technology credits: 2<br />

This course will introduce the student to MIDI (Musician Instrument Digital Interface)<br />

technology for basic sequencing, recording, and score production. These techniques will be<br />

applied in the production of original compositions and arrangements.<br />

PREREQUISITES: MUS202<br />

MUS395 Independent Study in Music credits: 1<br />

Junior level independent study.<br />

MUS425 Seminar in Church Music I credits: 3<br />

This course offers an in-depth study of the leadership role the parish musician plays in<br />

Christian worship. Special emphasis will be placed on the ministry of the parish musician,<br />

philosophy of music in worship, and staff relationships. PREREQUISITES: MUS325<br />

MUS426 Seminar in Church Music II credits: 3<br />

Students explore the leadership and ministry roles the parish musician plays through contemporary,<br />

jazz influenced musical styles used in Christian worship.<br />

PREREQUISITES: MUS425<br />

MUS446 Service Playing & Literature credits: 2<br />

Examination and evaluation of materials useful for service playing and choir accompaniment;<br />

development of requisite technique through practical application.<br />

MUS483 Recital Repertoire credits: 2<br />

A concentrated semester of study in a principal instrument or voice culminating in the senior<br />

recital.<br />

MUS495 Independent Study in Music credits: 1<br />

Senior level independent study.<br />

This course serves as a vehicle for development of skills necessary in scientific inquiry and<br />
