INFORMATION NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE - the whole system <strong>of</strong> transmission l<strong>in</strong>ks,<br />
access procedures, legal and general frameworks, and the basic and supportive services <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation network;<br />
INFORMATION SOCIETY (IS) - a society which makes extensive use <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
networks and ICT, produces large quantities <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation and communications products and<br />
services, and has a diversified content <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) - means the hardware, s<strong>of</strong>tware and methods used for<br />
the electronic process<strong>in</strong>g and transfer <strong>of</strong> data.<br />
INTEROPERABILITY – the ability for organisations to share <strong>in</strong>formation systems and/or data,<br />
generally based on us<strong>in</strong>g common standards.<br />
MIDDLEWARE - middleware is s<strong>of</strong>tware that <strong>in</strong>tegrates services and distributed applications<br />
across the Internet or local area networks, and may provide a set <strong>of</strong> services such as authentication,<br />
messag<strong>in</strong>g, transactions etc. Middleware allows government organisations to share data between front<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice service delivery channels and back <strong>of</strong>fice applications and processes, both with<strong>in</strong> and across<br />
organisations, and is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly perceived as a technology for delivery <strong>of</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed-up e-government<br />
services.<br />
ONE-STOP SHOP - a government <strong>of</strong>fice where services from multiple government<br />
organisations are available.<br />
ONLINE GOVERNMENT SERVICES - services provided by, but not necessarily supplied by,<br />
the public adm<strong>in</strong>istration to citizens, bus<strong>in</strong>esses and organisations (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g other government<br />
organisations) through <strong>in</strong>formation networks.<br />
PORTAL – A Web site that co-ord<strong>in</strong>ates and presents <strong>in</strong>formation and services from a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
providers, with the content presented <strong>in</strong> accordance with criteria related to users’ needs.<br />
PUBLIC KEY INFRASTRUCTURE (PKI) - PKI is a method for authenticat<strong>in</strong>g a message<br />
sender or receiver and/or encrypt<strong>in</strong>g a message. It enables users <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>secure public network, such<br />
as the Internet, to securely and privately exchange data through the use <strong>of</strong> a cryptographic key pair that<br />
is obta<strong>in</strong>ed and shared through a trusted authority. It provides for a use <strong>of</strong> a digital certificate that can<br />
identify an <strong>in</strong>dividual or an organisation, and directory services that can store, verify and, when<br />
necessary, revoke the certificates.<br />
