405. Underground Service Credit<br />
For Cambridge and South Districts only:<br />
For residential customers requesting installation of an<br />
underground service at customer’s expense, a credit may be<br />
available to the customer. The credit is based on the cost<br />
NSTAR would normally incur to install up to two poles on<br />
private property to service a new single family dwelling.<br />

details of this policy.<br />
406. When Customers Install Their Own Electric<br />
Service Facilities<br />
In certain instances, the customer may be allowed or required<br />
to employ a contractor to install on private property all or a<br />
portion of the necessary service construction under the<br />
following conditions:<br />
A. All material and construction shall conform to NSTAR<br />
standards.<br />
B. Only authorized NSTAR personnel are permitted to make<br />
any type of new electrical connection to NSTAR supply<br />
lines or equipment.<br />
C. Before the installation will be energized, authorized<br />
NSTAR representatives will inspect the installation for<br />
conformance to NSTAR construction standards.<br />
D. Prior to energizing the line, the customer must submit a<br />
copy of the “as built plans” and easements shall be<br />

conveyed to NSTAR. In addition, the customer will be<br />
responsible for the tax liability on such construction.<br />

before beginning construction.<br />
407. Policy on Connections<br />
NSTAR will connect customer’s wiring to NSTAR facilities for<br />
final connections for permanent or temporary services and will<br />
not permit or tolerate unauthorized persons to connect to<br />
NSTAR conductors or equipment.<br />
NSTAR will allow licensed electricians to cut and reconnect<br />
single services for service upgrades at the customer's weather<br />
head or underground services in the customer's terminal box<br />
provided the steps listed below are observed:<br />
A. Contact the NSTAR New Customer Connect Tech Center to<br />
have the existing meter unlocked. Allow five working days.<br />
B. Notify the local inspection authority of the proposed work<br />
and obtain all necessary permits. No reconnection is<br />
permitted without prior approval of the local inspection<br />
authority. See Article 111 for information regarding your<br />
local inspection authority.<br />
C. The added load on the service shall not be utilized until<br />
NSTAR has completed all of its work.<br />
D. All conductors must be cut and reconnected on the<br />
customer’s side of the existing connections. Proper<br />
connectors shall be used and three feet of extra conductor<br />
must be supplied to form a drip loop.<br />
E. The old meter should be used whenever possible to make<br />
the connection in the new socket. If jumpers are necessary,<br />
permission to install jumpers must be obtained from the<br />
NSTAR New Customer Connect Tech Center.<br />
