Communiques issued from headquarters<br />

<strong>at</strong> Atlantic City indic<strong>at</strong>e tii<strong>at</strong> next<br />

year's campaign against New Jersey's<br />

old enemy will command all the engines<br />

<strong>of</strong> modern science. M<strong>at</strong>footer<br />

c<strong>at</strong>erpillar tractors are to pound over<br />

the swamps, dragging mowing machines<br />

after them. Teachers on vac<strong>at</strong>ion are<br />

to be turned into minute men, hunting<br />

the mosquito with an oil can. Cresylic<br />

acid is to be put in the oil to make it<br />

spread better. Gambusia are to be<br />

brought north to prey upon the mosquito.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the little fish are already<br />

in the marshy pools, but will<br />

they live through the winter A Canadian<br />

entomologist says th<strong>at</strong> the Dominion<br />

has succeeded in keeping them<br />

alive even through its rigorous winters<br />

—but th<strong>at</strong> was in pools fed by the hot<br />

springs <strong>of</strong> Banff. He pins his faith on<br />

the powdered root <strong>of</strong> the derris plant,<br />

EMBATTLED MOSQUITOES<br />

to be imported from the Malay Peninsula<br />

and shot <strong>at</strong> the mosquitoes from<br />

an aeroplane.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the veterans sc<strong>of</strong>f <strong>at</strong> these<br />

newfangled notions ; are cool, even, to<br />

William E. Donnelly's scheme for a<br />

combin<strong>at</strong>ion canal, dike, and motor<br />

highway along the coast, which would<br />

drown the mosquitoes, redeem the<br />

fl<strong>at</strong>s, and enable New Jersey farmers<br />

to "draw a check on the mud bank."<br />

<strong>The</strong> old-timers prefer to rely on the<br />

tried methods <strong>of</strong> ditching, draining and<br />

oiling, with perhaps a little specul<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

in gambusia on the side. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

have learned from hard experience th<strong>at</strong><br />

they cannot relax their efforts. Mosquitoes<br />

are a good deal like the spoils<br />

system—extermin<strong>at</strong>ed long ago by all<br />

accounts, but apparently still very<br />

much alive. New York Times.<br />

DR. GLENN FRANK ON PERIODIC EXAMINATIONS<br />

Dr. Glenn Frank, president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin, says<br />

"If I were twenty-one, and knew all<br />

th<strong>at</strong> I know <strong>at</strong> thirty-seven, I should<br />

give system<strong>at</strong>ic and sustained <strong>at</strong>tention<br />

first to my health.<br />

"I should begin <strong>at</strong> twenty-one to<br />

forestall th<strong>at</strong> physical slowing down<br />

th<strong>at</strong> comes to the careless man in his<br />

l<strong>at</strong>e thirties or early forties. I should<br />

avoid becoming self-conscious about my<br />

health. I should r<strong>at</strong>her be a dyspeptic<br />

than a neurasthenic, but I would begin<br />

<strong>at</strong> twenty-one, when all my bodily processes<br />

were functioning flawlessly, paying<br />

system<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>at</strong>tention to keeping myself<br />

fit.<br />

"I should avoid health fads. I<br />

should take all my advice from a reputable<br />

physician. I should have a thorough<br />

physical examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> least<br />

twice a year. In the line <strong>of</strong> these<br />

semi-annual examin<strong>at</strong>ions, I should<br />

really follow my physician's advice, regarding<br />

diet, exercise, working habits,<br />

clothing, the ventil<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> my home<br />

and <strong>of</strong>fice, and so on, and I should not<br />

economize on doctor's bills. At the<br />

first hint <strong>of</strong> illness or irregularity, I<br />

should go to my physician on the theory<br />

th<strong>at</strong> I should r<strong>at</strong>her have him<br />

keep me well than cure me after I<br />

fell<br />

sick.<br />

"Some geniuses have done magnificent<br />

work with frail and diseased<br />

bodies, but for most <strong>of</strong> us success and<br />

happiness will depend in no small<br />

measure upon the physical energy we<br />

can put as a driving force behind our<br />

abilities, and even the geniuses would<br />

do better work with better bodies."<br />

Dr. Frank has given advice here th<strong>at</strong><br />

every person in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> should<br />

immedi<strong>at</strong>ely proceed to take. Dr.<br />

Frank might have added th<strong>at</strong> if one<br />

has not begun to conserve health <strong>at</strong><br />

twenty-one, they should begin <strong>at</strong> thirtyseven,<br />

and if not <strong>at</strong> thirty-seven, sixtyseven.<br />

Again, he might have added<br />

th<strong>at</strong> the physical examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> children<br />

semi-annually is <strong>of</strong> tremendous<br />

importance to the safety and physical<br />

well-being <strong>of</strong> the family. This opinion<br />

and program <strong>of</strong> Dr. Frank is most<br />

heartily endorsed by <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>'s<br />

St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> sunrise surely makes a hit<br />

Inspiring and immense<br />

But wh<strong>at</strong> most people know <strong>of</strong> it<br />

Is hearsay evidence.<br />
