• The Crimea peninsula
• Leafy boulevards of Kiev
Ukraine is the second largest country in
Europe. In the south of the country, the
Crimean peninsula has a number of fascinating
historical sites ranging from Greek ruins to
imperial Russian palaces.
Stay in the coastal resort of Yalta and
travel on day excursions to Sevastopol
and Simferopol. The battlefield of Balaklava,
where Lord Cardigan led the Light Brigade, is
easily accessible from either city. For literary
enthusiasts, a visit to Pushkin’s house and
museum in Yalta should not be missed. The
city of Lvov in the west of the country is a
Unesco world heritage site due its outstanding
architecture and Odessa in the south has the
famous Potemkin steps. Both of these cities
can be reached by air via Kiev.
Romania
• Fortified churches of Biertan
• The palaces of Pele and Pelisor
Many people associate Romania with Dracula
and Transylvania, however the country offers a
wealth of other attractions to the visitor. In the
north are the renowned painted monasteries
of Humor, Voronet and Sucevita. It requires
a full day touring in the area to view these
magnificent churches, which have survived the
harsh environmental conditions. The towns
of Brasov and Sibiu are centred on medieval
squares and are hardly touched by modern
designs. Sighisoara, located close to Brasov,
is an excellent example of a medieval village
with its walls and watchtowers still intact.
Many French architects designed the capital,
Bucharest, and this reflects in the Parisian feel
to the city, with its wide leafy boulevards. The
Palace of Parliament is the world’s second
largest building.
Hungary
• Lake Balaton
• Spa hotels of Esztergom
Most first time travellers to Hungary focus on
the capital, Budapest, where the Danube river
splits the Buda and Pest sides, but Hungary
has much to offer even the most seasoned
traveller. Lake Balaton in the west is central
Europe’s largest lake and, apart from leisure
pursuits, has a number of castles and museums
dotted along the shorefront. The Kis-Balaton
is one of Europe’s premier birdwatching
locations. Formerly the capital, Esztergom is
now a resort city, which specialises in spa and
holistic treatments. Pecs was the European
Capital of Culture in 2010 and has a thriving
history dating back more than 2,000 years. Its
Christian necropolis is inscribed to the Unesco
world heritage list. Debrecen is known as the
Calvinist Rome, due to its reformed churches
and great library.
