travelling on a fully crewed traditional turkish fishing boat, known as a gulet, on a private basis
is a superb way to see the natural and historical attractions of the turkish riviera. Please contact
Cox & Kings for further details about gulet cruises.
turkish riviera
Also known as the turquoise coast due to
the colour of the sea, the Turkish riviera is an
area in the south-western part of Turkey. It is
more than 1,400km long and home to many
picturesque secluded bays and fine white sandy
beaches, which stretch along both the Aegean
and Mediterranean seas. The Taurus mountains
form the backdrop to much of the coastline,
with many ancient ruins and Unesco world
heritage sites located among the coastal towns.
From Bodrum’s beaches and striking coastline
to crusader castles and the magnificent Celsus
Library in Ephesus, the idyllic Turkish coast is an
ideal place to relax and unwind while cruising
through one of the Mediterranean’s most
picturesque areas.
When to travel
The most popular period to sail occurs
during the months of July and August. This, of
course, coincides with the customary school
holiday time, when many families want to
spend quality time together, and cruising the
Turkish riviera provides one of the most
enjoyable ways to do that. For those who
travel outside the high season, it can prove
more economical to visit in the months of
May, June, September and October, and there
is a greater likelihood of finding privacy and
tranquillity in the attractive coves and bays at
this quieter time of year.
Gulets
The gulet is a twin- or triple-masted, traditional
fishing boat found in south-west Turkey.
Usually constructed of wood and equipped
with an engine as well as sails, they vary in
length from 14 to 40 metres and have a
spacious sundeck and wooden finishings of
teak and mahogany. The gulets are used mainly
as tourist charter boats, cruising along the
coast during the day and spending the night in
port, allowing passengers to sample the local
cuisine and atmosphere of the towns along
the coast. Cabins are all air conditioned and
feature en suite facilities and a fitted shower.
All boats are fully crewed with various itinerary
options and routes available.
