weather
albania
Albania has hot dry summers and cool wet winters. The Albanian coastline
benefits from moderate sea breezes in the summer, making for a very
pleasant climate. The central mountains can become very cold in the
winter months, particularly at night. The best time to visit Albania is either
side of the summer peak.
baltic states
The Baltic states have a very similar climate to the adjacent parts of Russia,
although it can be milder, mainly due to the moderating influence of the
Baltic Sea, which does not freeze for prolonged periods. The Baltics are
open to the weather coming in from the Atlantic as well as north-western
Europe. During severe spells of winter weather, the area is dominated by
cold winds from the interior of Russia.
of year, temperatures are warm and the skies are clear. June through to
this guide explains the general weather conditions for each featured
country and recommends the best time of year to travel to your chosen
destination. Please take into account that this data is based on historic
averages and, in a world of increasingly erratic climatic conditions, the
weather at any given time may vary from the norm.
greece
Greece has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine, mild
temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall. Due to the country’s
geographical position, its rugged relief and distribution between the mainland
and sea, there is great variation in Greece’s climate. In summer, the dry hot
days are cooled by seasonal winds called the meltemi, while mountainous
regions have generally lower temperatures. The winters are mild in lowland
areas, with a minimum amount of snow and ice, yet mountains are usually
snow-covered. Moreover, a common phenomenon is the occurrence of
different climatic conditions during the same season (for instance, mild heat
in coastal areas and cool temperatures in mountainous regions).
iceland
Summers are warm, with winters being quite mild on the lower levels,
mainly due to the warmth of the Gulf Stream. Iceland’s weather can be
changeable all year round, due to the island’s position in the stormiest part
of the Atlantic. Days can vary between sunny in the morning, wet in the
afternoon with possibly snow by the evening. Between May and August,
there is daylight nearly 24 hours a day.
spring and summer, with autumn and winter quite mild and dry. Mountain
areas have snow during winter and rain in the summer months. More
central areas are mild throughout the year.
Macedonia
By day, Macedonia’s summers are hot and dry; however, temperatures
drop at night. July and August are the best times to visit Macedonia in
respect of the weather and are, therefore, the busiest months for tourism,
although the climate is acceptable year-round. By contrast, the winters can
be very cold, particularly in the mountain regions.
Malta
The weather on the island of Malta is warm all year. July, August and
September are the hottest months, yet the presence of cool sea breezes
provide some welcome relief. Rain, when it does fall, is often in short,
sharp, spells and generally only in the winter months.
