TAILOR-MADE TRAVEL easTern euroPe Frescoes, Rila Monastery, Bulgaria Wawel castle, Krakow, Poland Witches Hill, Curonian Spit Bulgaria • The frescoes of Rila Monastery • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia Bordered by five countries and with a coastline on the Black Sea, the country has three main cities to focus your travels on: Sofia, Veliko Turnovo and Varna. Sofia is a modern and compact city, which is home to the renowned 10th-century Rila Monastery complex, located 120km from the city and easily accessible on a day excursion. The citadel of Veliko Turnovo can be walked around today and gives its visitors an impression of the area’s power in the middle ages. The archaeological sites of southern Bulgaria contain a large number of Thracian tombs with Kazanlak being the finest example. Varna has Bulgaria’s largest and most important museum, and is a great beach destination for the summer months. Sofia and Varna can easily be combined to feature in a city or beach itinerary. Poland • Rynek Glowny in Krakow • Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa When planning a holiday, the two destinations not to be missed in Poland are Warsaw and Krakow, both of which have numerous historical and cultural attractions. The average length of stay in the capital is two days and a longer time should be allowed for Krakow as, apart from city centre, there are also a number of nearby places of interest including the Wieliczka salt mine and the concentration camp of Auschwitz, which can be visited on day excursions. Travelling between both cities is easy using the fast and frequent rail service. In the west of Poland, the cities of Wroclaw and Poznan are excellent examples of restored medieval towns, following the destruction of the second world war. In the north, on the Baltic coast, is the seaport of Gdansk, which is an up-and-coming city break destination. Baltic states • Tallinn, Riga & Vilnius • The Curonian Spit The three countries that make up the Baltic states, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, each contain their own cultural identity and highlights. Apart from the main capital cities of Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius, there are also a number of smaller destinations of interest. On the Baltic coast of Lithuania lies the Curonian Spit, a wildlife and conservation sanctuary bordering Kaliningrad. The island of Muhu, off the Estonian coast, is a peaceful haven and contains an excellent hotel, the Padaste Manor. The Latvian beach resort of Jurmala is famous for its spa hotels and clear white beaches. Travel between the three countries is by a very comprehensive bus network or private transfers. Low cost carriers fly to the capitals on direct routes. SAS Scandinavian Airlines fly via Stockholm or Copenhagen from the UK. COX & KINGS RECOMMENDS . . . Hill of Crosses in Lithuania The Hill of Crosses is a unique and strange sight, where a mound that was associated with ancestor worship in the pre-Christian era has been filled with crosses of remembrance. Today, thousands of crosses create a sight that reflects the Lithuanian character, combining profound Catholic piety with an appreciation of the simple forms of folk art and the mysterious. Auschwitz in Poland Oswiecim (Auschwitz) concentration camp and neighbouring Birkenau are located 70km from Krakow. A visit to the camps brings home the horrors of Nazi rule and the Holocaust perhaps more than anywhere else in the world. Auschwitz was the largest German extermination camp where millions were killed in gas chambers or through disease and starvation. Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
