Known as the country’s greenest region,
Galicia is set in the remote north-western tip
of the peninsula. There are many old towns
to visit with much of the area maintaining
their medieval qualities. A trip to Santiago de
Compostela to visit the tomb of St James the
Apostle, Europe’s second most important
religious shrine is not to be missed. As the
jewel of Galicia’s culture and history, Santiago, a
world heritage site, is home to monuments of
both Spanish and international importance. The
ancient route of pilgrimage across this area
is still followed today by pilgrims and tourists.
Away from the hilly interior is the coastal town
of Vigo, the largest town in Galicia and the
most important fishing port in the country. The
city offers a mix of history, beaches and a taste
of modern cosmopolitan life.

Home to bullfighting, flamenco dancing and
religious processions, Andalucía is a diverse
region of Spain. The area is split into eight
provinces that stretch from the Almeria
deserts to Portugal. Cordoba is one of the
cities built by the Romans. It was a city of
great importance used for shipping Spanish
goods back to ancient Rome. The Mezquita,
Cordoba’s great mosque, dates back 12
centuries and one of the largest in Islam. When
the city was taken back by the Christians in
1236, the mosque was left standing and a
cathedral was built in the midst of its rows
of arches and columns, which created the
extraordinary church-mosque that stands
today. Granada is home to the Alhambra, a
series of palaces and gardens built when the
Nasrid dynasty ruled the town.

Situated at the foot of the western Pyrenees,
the Basque country was once a powerful
medieval kingdom. As a coastal region, deep
sea fishing remains a strong industry in
the area and plays a large part in the local
cuisine. Places of interest include the capital
Pamplona, home to the bull running fiesta
that takes places each year. La Rioja, known
for its vineyards that produce many of Spain’s
finest wines, also offers many historic sites
such as the cathedral of Santo Domingo de
la Calzaa and the monasteries of San Millan
de la Cogolla and Yuso. Bilbao, the largest
Basque city and the leading commercial port
in Spain, offers a range of cultural and historical
attractions. The Guggenheim Museum is the
jewel of the city with a collection of modern
and contemporary art.
