and subtropical lands, where tea and rice are grown. Moscow and St
sicilY
The weather of Sicily is particularly changeable in the winter months;
a cloudy wet day can often quickly change to a sunny and mild one.
Summers are more settled with generally 10 hours of sunshine a day,
in contrast to four or five in the winter months. The heat is at its most
intense in July and August, although it can be made more bearable by the
daytime sea breezes. Nights, however, can still be humid in the summer.
This is a country of many contrasts: the warm Mediterranean side with
balmy conditions, and the Atlantic side, which can be quite stormy. Rainfall
eases as you travel east along the Pyrenees – this mountain region is one
of the wettest parts of the country. The south, however, has hot sunny days
from spring to early autumn, with high temperatures occasionally cooled by
the sea breezes. Northern Spain can experience frequent stormy periods.
Summer lasts roughly from June to September and offers the most pleasant
climate for outdoor pursuits. The shoulder seasons fall either side of summer:
in April, May and October. Spring is a beautiful time of year to explore the
blooming countryside. In Ticino, flowers are in bloom as early as March.
Istanbul is blessed with very pleasant summer temperatures. Turkey’s
Anatolian plateau and Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are hotter at this
time of year, as is the south-east of Turkey. Although mild, the Black Sea
region receives more rainfall throughout the year. The winter months see
temperatures drop, but in Istanbul they usually remain above freezing. The
eastern mountainous region of Turkey is cooler throughout the year and
particularly in the winter months, when the snow falls.
Ukraine
In the spring months from late April until early June, the chestnut blossom
comes into bloom and Easter brings many Orthodox celebrations and rituals,
making this the best time to visit Ukraine. The calm of the autumn months
is equally inviting. The summer months can be quite hot and, at this time,
many of the locals head for the Crimea and mountains, while some places,
including most theatres, close down for the months of July and August.
FestiVals in eUroPe
Europe is renowned for its numerous festivals. Every country has many
festivals, both religious and cultural. Some of the major festivals are
celebrated nationwide, but many take place only in specific towns or cities.
Accommodation in the locality of the celebrations tends to get booked
up many months in advance and some sites and shops may remain closed.
To enable you to experience these festivals, we have highlighted the
festivals that coincide with particular departures in the relevant tour notes.
If travelling on a tailor-made holiday, a festival can often be incorporated in
your itinerary. Please contact Cox & Kings for further details.
