Visiting the Unesco world heritage sites of
Avila, Salamanca and Toledo, this 7-day self-drive
itinerary around Spain’s Castilla region contains
a host of historical cities and attractions.
THE JOURNEY
Day 1 – To Avila: Morning flight from London
Heathrow to Madrid with British Airways.
Drive to Avila, via Escorial, and view the
Unesco world heritage site of El Escorial. Built
by Philip II in the 16th century, it contains the
burial chambers of the Spanish monarchy from
the Houses of Habsburg and Bourbon. Stay 1
night at the Hotel Palacio de Valderrabanos. (L)
Day 2 – To Salamanca: Morning walking tour
of Avila, including the city walls. The 2.5km-long
walls contain nine gateways and have guarded
the city for more than a millennium. Drive to
Salamanca and stay 2 nights at the AC Palacio
de San Esteban. (B)
Day 3 – Salamanca: Morning walking tour of
Salamanca, including Plaza Mayor, the Roman
bridge and the domed cathedral. Afternoon at
leisure. (B)
Day 4 – To Toledo: Morning drive to Toledo,
which has a wealth of architectural treasures.
It is known as ‘the city of three cultures’, due
to its Christian, Jewish and Arabic populations,
which have all left their imprint on the city in
the form of churches, palaces, mosques and
synagogues. Stay 1 night at the Hotel Cigarral
El Bosque. (B, L)
Day 5 – To Madrid: Morning at leisure.
Afternoon drive to Madrid. Stay 2 nights at the
Silken Puerta America Hotel. (B)
Day 6 – Madrid: Full day at leisure. (B)

hours) via La Rioja’s capital of Logrono. Stay 2
nights at the NH Palacio de la Merced. (B)
Day 4 – Burgos: Day at leisure. Explore the
churches and places of worship in Burgos, with
the highlight being the gothic cathedral. (B)
Day 5 – To Leon: Morning drive to Leon (2
hours). Stay 2 nights at the Parador Hostal San
Marcos for 2 nights. (B)
Day 6 – Leon: Full day at leisure. Visit the
Cathedral of Santa Maria de la Regla, a fine
example of the gothic architectural style. (B)
Day 7 – To Santiago de Compostela: Morning
drive to Santiago de Compostela (4 hours).
Stay 2 nights at the Parador Hostal Dos Reis
Catolicos. (B)
Day 8 – Santiago de Compostela: Full day at
leisure. Explore the capital of Galicia, to see the
imposing twin-spire cathedral and the various
