Reykjavik, Thingvellir and Reykholt, home<br />
to the pre-eminent author of the icelandic<br />
sagas – before heading north via the stunning<br />
Hvalfjordur to the snaefellsnes peninsula. West<br />
and southern iceland offer a host of natural<br />
wonders and stunning scenery to explore, from<br />
the snaefellsnes peninsula to the pompeiilike<br />
remains on the Westman islands, the<br />
Eyjafjallajokull glacier and the geothermal waters<br />
of the Blue Lagoon. This 7-day itinerary explores<br />
the main natural and historical attractions of<br />
both western and southern iceland.<br />
THE JOURNEY<br />
Day 1 – To Reykjavik: Afternoon flight from<br />
London Gatwick to Keflavik International airport<br />
with Iceland Air. Transfer from the airport to<br />
Reykjavik by Flybus shared coach and stay<br />
overnight at the Hilton Hotel. (N)<br />
Day 2 – To snaefellsnes: This morning, head to<br />
the town of Borgarnes and visit the Icelandic<br />
Settlement Centre before heading up to the<br />
Snaefellsnes peninsula. Stay 2 nights at Hotel<br />
Framnes or similar. (B)<br />
Day 3 – snaefellsnes: Day at leisure to<br />
explore the stunning natural wonders of the<br />
Snaefellsnes peninsula. (B)<br />
Day 4 – To Gullfoss: Today, visit the historic<br />
site of Reykholt, before continuing to the<br />
waterfalls of Hraunfoss and Barnafoss. Continue<br />
to Thingvellir National Park, site of the world’s<br />
oldest parliament before visiting the geothermal<br />
area of Geysir and Gullfoss waterfalls. Stay<br />
overnight at Hotel Gullfoss or similar. (B)<br />
Day 5 – To Reykjavik: This morning, head south<br />
past Mount Hekla and visit the spectacular<br />
waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss.<br />
Before reaching Vik take the road to the<br />
Snaefellsnes, Iceland<br />
isolated Dyrholaey headland for panoramic<br />
views along the coast. Return to Reykjavik and<br />
stay overnight at the Hilton Hotel. (B)<br />
Day 6 – Reykjavik: Day at leisure to explore the<br />
Reykjanes peninsula and visit the Blue Lagoon. (B)<br />
Day 7 – To London: Early morning transfer<br />
to Keflavik airport by Flybus shared coach for<br />
your flight back to London with Iceland Air. (B)<br />

Experience iceland on a circuit of the island<br />
from the iconic two-lane highway known as<br />
Route 1, completed in 1974 to mark 1,100<br />
years of settlement. This 8-day self-drive<br />
itinerary incorporates the historical heartland<br />
of iceland - Reykjavik, Thingvellir and Reykholt,<br />
the wild southern and eastern coastline framed<br />
by the brooding peaks of Mount Hekla and<br />
the vatnajokull glacier - and continues to the<br />
stunning Lake Myvatn and northern capital of<br />
Akureyri before finishing in vibrant Reykjavik.<br />
THE JOURNEY<br />
Day 1 – To Reykjavik: Afternoon flight from<br />
London Gatwick to Keflavik International<br />
airport with Iceland Air. Transfer from the<br />
airport to Reykjavik by Flybus shared coach<br />
and stay overnight at the Hilton Hotel. (N)<br />
Day 2 – To vik: Visit the historic Golden circle<br />
of Thingvellir, Gullfoss and the geothermal area<br />
of Haukadalur. Continue south along the coast<br />
to Vik and overnight at the Hotel Edda Vik or<br />
similar. (B)<br />
Lake Mývatn<br />
Day 3 – To Hofn: Drive via the village of<br />
Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skaftafell National Park<br />
and visit <strong>Europe</strong>’s largest glacier the Vatnajokull<br />
glacier. Continue to the village of Hofn and stay<br />
overnight at the Arnanes Country Hotel or<br />
similar. (B)<br />
Day 4 – To Egilsstadir: Today, travel along the<br />
rugged eastern coastline through small fishing<br />
villages to Egilsstadir. Stay overnight at Hotel<br />
Herad or similar. (B)<br />
Day 5 – To Lake Myvatn: Journey north-west<br />
towards the Lake Mývatn area across the<br />
Modrudalsoraefi highlands and continue to<br />
Lake Mývatn. Overnight at the Sel Hotel or<br />
similar. (B)<br />
Day 6 – To Akureyri: Today, explore the<br />
natural attractions of Lake Mývatn, such as the<br />
volcanic area by Krafla and boiling mud pools<br />
of Namaskard. Continue to Akureyri and stay<br />
overnight at the Icelandair Hotel Akureyri or<br />
similar. (B)<br />
Day 7 – To Reykjavik: Drive west through<br />
the historic region of Skagafjordur, area and<br />
visit and the Icelandic Settlement Centre<br />
at Borgarnes. Return to Reykjavik and stay<br />
overnight at the Hilton Hotel. (B)<br />
Day 8 – To London: Early morning transfer<br />
to Keflavik airport by Flybus shared coach for<br />
your flight back to London with Iceland Air. (B)<br />
