The largest country in western Europe and
the world’s most visited destination for
more than 20 years, France is a country
that contains a wide variety of geographical,
cultural and architectural treasures. Whether
it’s the majesty of the Alps and extinct
volcanoes of the Massif Central or verdant
landscapes dotted with the vines of Provence
and the blue waters of the French Riviera,
the changing scenery and climate offer yearround
attractions for visitors. The country has
also produced some of the continent’s most
influential writers and thinkers, coupled with
world renowned artists such as Renoir, Monet,
Cezanne, Gauguin and Matisse, to name but
a few. Paris, the ‘city of light’, is also known as
one of the most beautiful and romantic cities
in the world, and has captured the hearts and
minds of travellers for centuries. Famous for
its strong culinary traditions, France produces
more than 250 cheeses and some of the
world’s best-loved wines.
Traditionally known as a land of stunning
mountain scenery, with a central plateau
of rolling hills and large lakes, Switzerland
has four different official languages and
showcases three very different national
characteristics. To the north, the Swiss
are culturally related to their German
neighbours, while to the south-west the
lifestyle is very much attributable to the
heavy French influence. In the warmer southeast,
town piazzas have a vibrant Italian cafe
culture. Added to this mix of people and
scenery are the great cities of Berne and
Zurich where well preserved Altstadts (old
town) arcades and long, winding, streets are
full of boutiques, restaurants and exclusive
shops as well as a number of museums and
art galleries. While located by one of the
largest lakes in western Europe and in the
shadows of the Alps, the city of Geneva has
attracted visitors over the centuries due to
its natural scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
The largest country in central Europe,
Germany comprises a federation of 16
states each with their own cultures and
character, while many of the country’s major
cities have long histories as regional capitals.
Highlights include the sophistication of the
Bavarian capital, Munich, the restored baroque
architecture of Dresden and the mercantile
history of the Hanseatic League city of
Hamburg, from where wooded parks and
pristine lakes are always within easy reach of
the city’s residents. Since re-unification, the
country has grown as a tourist destination
centred around the re-emergence of Berlin, a
rapidly changing, hugely influential and vibrant
city. With the collapse of Berlin Wall in 1989, it
now buzzes with an exciting nightlife, superb
dining options and an array of fascinating
historical buildings. Famed as a centre of the
arts, Berlin has more than 170 museums,
including the Pergamon museum, which is
rich in classical antiquity, and the Schloss
Charlottenburg, the former summer residence
of Queen Sophie Charlotte.
