thrace
• the battlefield’s of Gallipoli
• Bursa & Erdine
Thrace is rich in historical and natural sites.
With Istanbul at its centre, it also features the
two old imperial capitals of Edirne and Bursa.
The Selimiye Mosque in Edirne is often spoken
of as being the greatest mosque complex
built by the Ottoman’s. The best time to visit
Edirne is in June when the annual grease
wrestling competition occurs. Bursa has a
greater ratio of tombs and mosques located in
its boundaries than any other Turkish city. The
principal attraction of the region is the Gallipoli
peninsula, which was the scene of the aborted
Allied invasion of 1915. With reconstructed
trenches and an excellent museum at
Kabatepe, visitors will view the site of the
landings plus the various battlefields. The Bird
Paradise National Park is on the migration path
between Europe and Asia and contains more
than 250 different bird species, a favourite of
amateur and professional bird lovers alike.
the Aegean
• the ruins of troy
• Ephesus
The setting of Homer’s epic stories, the
Aegean coast has a 5,000 year history that is
unsurpassed. With the fabled lost city of Troy in
the north and the Roman capital of Asia Minor,
Ephesus, in the south, visitors are able to stay in
the various beach resorts and travel to some
of Europe’s best cultural attractions on day
excursions. The city of Bodrum contained one
of the original wonders of the world in the
Halicarnassus mausoleum and has an excellent
crusader castle. North of Bodrum are the
hillside towns of Priene, Didyma and Miletus,
ancient reminders of the Ionian league. Further
inland from the coast are the Roman ruins of
Pergamon, Aphrodisias and Hierapolis. View
the travertine terraces of salt at Pamukkale
for a different view of the area. Stay in either
the chic resorts of Cesme and Ayvalik or the
more mainstream destinations of Bodrum and
Marmaris (see hotels on page 60).
the Mediterranean coast
• Lycian tombs
• Antalya
The Turquoise coast is a popular destination for
tourists, with Antalya, Fethiye, Olu Deniz, Kalkan
and Kas being firm favourites for many years.
The legacies of its many rulers have left visitors
to the area some excellent archaeological sites
to view. Situated between Fethiye and Antalya
are the Lycian Tombs, which have been carved
out of rock and resemble ordinary houses.
Some of the best examples are to be viewed
from a cruise along the coast. The vast Roman
amphitheatre at Aspendos is still used today
for its annual ballet and opera festival. The sites
of Perge and Termessos are worth visiting and
date back to Alexander the Great’s invasion of
the Persian empire.
For more leisurely pursuits, the town of Belek
has some excellent golf courses and spa hotels.
