One of the lesser-known regions of Italy,
Puglia, also known as Apulia, is situated in the
south, or ‘heel’. With baroque towns, whitewashed
trulli houses (dry stone huts with
conical roofs), orchards and olive groves to
visit, this 8-day self-drive itinerary explores
the Unesco world heritage sites of Matera
and Alberobello with the opportunity to
relax on the long stretches of golden sandy
beaches of the Adriatic.
THE JOURNEY
Day 1 – To Alberobello: Fly from London
Gatwick to Bari with British Airways. Collect
your hire car (based on Group B car rental).
Drive to the Grand Hotel Olimpo in
Alberobello for 2 nights. (N)
Day 2 – Alberobello: Full day at leisure.
Located 60km from Bari, the town of
Alberobello is entirely comprised of white
cylindrical trulli houses. (B)
Day 3 – To Ostuni: Morning at leisure.
Afternoon drive to Ostuni and stay at the
Masseria Il Frantoio for 1 night. (B)
Day 4 – To Lecce: Morning at leisure. Drive to
Lecce and stay 2 nights at the Risorgimento
Resort. (B)
Day 5 – Lecce: Full day at leisure. Lecce is
known as the ‘Florence of the south’. Visitors
can explore the cobbled lanes and squares. (B)
Day 6 – To Matera: At leisure. Drive to Matera
and stay 2 nights at Relais La Casa di Lucio. (B)
Day 7 – Matera: Full day at leisure. The ancient
city of Matera dates back to the Neolithic
age. Natural caves were transformed into a

spectacular Mount Etna or the Greek theatre
