programme integrated gender equality into sexual
and reproductive health via three strategies:
• Providing information and clinical services
for women, information, services and
counselling that helped women identify the
root causes of the sexual health problems in
their communities;
• Training community workers to create more
gender-sensitive service agencies and providers,
including teachers, police, judges, church
groups and so on who could develop more
woman-friendly practices;
• Changing gender attitudes in communities
by stimulating public debate on the situation
of women through brochures, street theatre,
community meetings and other ways of
disseminating information.
The programme found that a specific focus
on gender-based violence (particularly when
