It is the responsibility of all automobile manufacturers to keep an eye on the future of both car-based societies and<br />

energy issues when develop<strong>in</strong>g new vehicles. At <strong>Mazda</strong>, we are committed to th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g through '<strong>Mazda</strong> Values' <strong>in</strong> this<br />

arena too, and as a result, we have begun development work on hydrogen rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e vehicles. We are currently<br />

test<strong>in</strong>g these eng<strong>in</strong>es with a view to putt<strong>in</strong>g them to practical use.<br />

Hydrogen and gasol<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Hydrogen is <strong>in</strong> the spotlight at the moment as a particularly<br />

environment-friendly potential source of clean energy for the future.<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> developed the RX-8 Hydrogen RE by creat<strong>in</strong>g a fusion of its<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g hydrogen technology with the new-generation rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

RENESIS, enabl<strong>in</strong>g the natural driv<strong>in</strong>g feel of an <strong>in</strong>ternal combustion<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e to be comb<strong>in</strong>ed with excellent environmental performance. The<br />

RX-8 Hydrogen RE was unveiled at the 37th Tokyo Motor Show <strong>in</strong><br />

October 2003, and 12 months later, the Vehicle was given approval by<br />

the M<strong>in</strong>ister for Land, Infrastructure and Transport to beg<strong>in</strong> road tests,<br />

and received a number plate. The RX-8 hydrogen rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e car<br />

features a dual fuel system, which allows it to run on either gasol<strong>in</strong>e<br />

or hydrogen, and it is the first example <strong>in</strong> the world of a Vehicle<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g on two fuels be<strong>in</strong>g allowed to undergo road test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Hydrogen Rotary Eng<strong>in</strong>e emits no CO2 and almost no NOx,<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g its environmental performance quite superb. In addition to<br />

this, because it uses conventional eng<strong>in</strong>e parts and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

processes, it can be manufactured at low cost, and has high levels of<br />

built-<strong>in</strong> reliability. <strong>Mazda</strong> is collect<strong>in</strong>g data relat<strong>in</strong>g to the public-road<br />

test<strong>in</strong>g program, and analyz<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

car's performance, and is aim<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

have the RX-8 ready for leas<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

public offices and corporations<br />

with<strong>in</strong> two years, through<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g development on the<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal combustion performance of<br />

the eng<strong>in</strong>e, with the <strong>in</strong>tention of<br />

contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the creation of a<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> RENESIS hydrogen rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
