The Challenge of the Rotary Eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

The cont<strong>in</strong>uously-rotat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternal combustion eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>vented by<br />

Felix Wankel of Germany <strong>in</strong> 1919 was the first rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Compared to standard reciprocat<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>es it rotated smoothly, and<br />

the extremely simple structure mean a very low parts count. These<br />

features, along with very low noise and vibration, drew considerable<br />

attention years later, and over 100 firms around the world expressed<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> access<strong>in</strong>g the technology even as development proceeded<br />

toward a practical implementation. <strong>Mazda</strong> was also extremely<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g this new type of eng<strong>in</strong>e, recogniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> it a<br />

possible solution to the needs of the emerg<strong>in</strong>g motorized society.<br />

In 1961 we entered <strong>in</strong>to negotiations with NSU and Wankel GmbH,<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e technology. <strong>Mazda</strong> cleared a host of<br />

technical obstacles, and <strong>in</strong> May 1967 f<strong>in</strong>ally released the Cosmo<br />

Sports, mount<strong>in</strong>g the world's first 2-rotor rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e. This created<br />

the solid base beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>Mazda</strong>'s technology, which has earned its<br />

reputation across the globe, and was also the start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t of the<br />

"Zoom-Zoom" spirit represent<strong>in</strong>g our love for mach<strong>in</strong>ery and vehicles.<br />

From Post-War Recovery to the Present<br />

On a local radio program broadcast on January 4, 1953, Chairman<br />

Koichi Tanaka of Sanyo Mokuzai Bofu K.K. (now Xyence Corp.)<br />

commented "The War ended seven years ago, and there is still no<br />

place for the people assemble. It's a bit sad. I'd really like some sort<br />

of public auditorium." Tsuneji Matsuda, then president of <strong>Mazda</strong>,<br />

responded by approach<strong>in</strong>g eight key f<strong>in</strong>ancial leaders <strong>in</strong> the region<br />

together with President Tanaka to raise funds. The ten firms<br />

contributed about 350 million yen, and with the cooperation of local<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry the Hiroshima Public Auditorium (now the International<br />

Conference Center Hiroshima) was completed with<strong>in</strong> the Peace<br />

Memorial Park <strong>in</strong> February 1955. The ten firms went on to create the<br />

Futaba Association, which led efforts to improve the city<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure, such as through the donation of the Hiroshima<br />

Prefectural Government offices (1956), the Hiroshima Municipal<br />

Baseball Stadium (1957) and the Hiroshima Bus Center (1957), as<br />

well as the Hiroshima Prefecture Gymnasium and Hiroshima Bus<br />

Center. Their selfless spirit cont<strong>in</strong>ues to impact social contribution<br />

today, while <strong>Mazda</strong> itself provides f<strong>in</strong>ancial support for local<br />

professional sports teams such as the Hiroshima Carp (baseball) and<br />

Three-wheel truck production starts.<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong>'s first vehicle was the three-wheel "<strong>Mazda</strong>-go" truck. 66<br />

units were manufactured the first year.<br />

This lightweight 4-seater has a 356-cc air-cooled 2-cyl<strong>in</strong>der<br />

OHV (16 H.P.) eng<strong>in</strong>e. Its thorough weight-reduction design<br />

gave it a mileage of 32 km/liter.<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> Cosmo Sports, world’s first rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e vehicle, <strong>in</strong>troduced.<br />

The Cosmo Sports, a 2-seater, mounted a newly-developed 491 cc x 2,<br />

rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e(110 H.P.) . It delivered a top speed of 185 km/h and a 0-<br />

400 meter acceleration of 16.3 seconds.<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> Savanna RX-7 <strong>in</strong>troduced.<br />

Developed under the basic theme of "pursu<strong>in</strong>g the sheer joy of<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g," the 12A-type rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e (130 H.P.) was mounted<br />

front-mid, deliver<strong>in</strong>g superb handl<strong>in</strong>g and stability.<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> Familia w<strong>in</strong>s<br />

"Japanese Car for the Year."<br />

Eunos Roadster (<strong>Mazda</strong> MX-5) released.<br />

Marketed to provide drivers with the thrill of driv<strong>in</strong>g as a lightweight<br />

sports car carry<strong>in</strong>g on a proud tradition, the Roadster became extremely<br />

popular <strong>in</strong> North America before it was released <strong>in</strong> Japan, and went on to<br />

become a best-sell<strong>in</strong>g product.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>ventor researched the rotary eng<strong>in</strong>e, wonder<strong>in</strong>g if it could be<br />

possible to make a completely-rotational eng<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>stead of a<br />

reciprocat<strong>in</strong>g one. His dream was f<strong>in</strong>ally realized <strong>in</strong> 1959 with German<br />

motorcycle manufacturer NSU (later merged with Audi).<br />
