Reduc<strong>in</strong>g Wastes<br />
To most effectively utilize resources and contribute to the realization of a recycl<strong>in</strong>g society,<br />
<strong>Mazda</strong> is work<strong>in</strong>g to m<strong>in</strong>imize waste generation <strong>in</strong> all our activities and to recycle as much as possible.<br />
Second stage of zero-emissions goal achieved<br />
<strong>Mazda</strong> has been steadily advanc<strong>in</strong>g its plan to achieve zero emissions -<br />
the elim<strong>in</strong>ation of the direct landfill wastes - for some time. The orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
target was to reduce the direct landfill wastes from all domestic<br />
production po<strong>in</strong>ts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g development, adm<strong>in</strong>istrative and technical<br />
sectors, to under 5% of the fiscal 1990 level. This goal was achieved<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g FY 2002, one year ahead of schedule. From FY 2003 we began<br />
work toward our second-stage goal: reduc<strong>in</strong>g the direct landfill waste to<br />
under 1% by the end of FY 2004, and we were successful <strong>in</strong> January<br />

The key areas of improvement <strong>in</strong> the atta<strong>in</strong>ment of the second-stage<br />
zero emission goal were reduc<strong>in</strong>g the tonnage of waste generated, and<br />
recycl<strong>in</strong>g more waste. In FY 2004 we slashed the tonnage of metal<br />
scrap generated, and promoted <strong>in</strong>-plant recycl<strong>in</strong>g by melt<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
return<strong>in</strong>g ref<strong>in</strong>ed metal to the feed supply for new parts. We also made<br />
progress <strong>in</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g slag and cupola dust, and reduc<strong>in</strong>g the tonnage of<br />
chemical sludge generated. As a result of these efforts our recycl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
efficiency did not drop under 90%, and the direct landfill waste tonnage<br />
was 1,140 tons (a reduction of 887 tons from last year).<br />

We are also tak<strong>in</strong>g environmental issues <strong>in</strong>to consideration when design<strong>in</strong>g packag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
and procur<strong>in</strong>g packag<strong>in</strong>g and wrapp<strong>in</strong>g materials. When <strong>Mazda</strong> automobile parts are<br />
shipped to overseas assembly plants or sales companies with<strong>in</strong> Japan, they are now<br />
packed us<strong>in</strong>g returnable packag<strong>in</strong>g materials. <strong>Mazda</strong> is promot<strong>in</strong>g '3R' activities (the<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Returnable, Reuse and Reduce), and have implemented reviews of<br />
packag<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>in</strong> the light of this, with the aim of reduc<strong>in</strong>g use of resources. The<br />
reductions achieved dur<strong>in</strong>g FY 2004 are shown <strong>in</strong> the table below.<br />

Reduce Reuse Returnable<br />
Expanded use of semi-dry mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (see page 44) resulted <strong>in</strong> a<br />
reduction <strong>in</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g fluid consumption, and a result<strong>in</strong>g reduction <strong>in</strong><br />
emissions of sludge and other waste. General office waste like paper,<br />
empty cans and plastic conta<strong>in</strong>ers were thoroughly sorted and recycled,<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g a further reduction <strong>in</strong> emissions.<br />
These efforts reduced the tonnage of waste processed by direct landfill<br />
to 1% or less of FY 1990 levels, achiev<strong>in</strong>g our second-stage zeroemission<br />
target. <strong>Mazda</strong> will cont<strong>in</strong>ue it activities to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> zero<br />
emission performance, and expand the program to the entire Group.<br />
