and Clean Production Activities<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> believes that the irreplaceable natural resources of the region around our Head Office <strong>in</strong> Hiroshima,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Seto Inland Sea National Park, are part of humanity's common heritage,<br />

and is committed to "clean production" with m<strong>in</strong>imal impact on the environment.<br />

Advance <strong>in</strong>spection system for chemical substances<br />

Before purchas<strong>in</strong>g a new type of oil, chemical, pa<strong>in</strong>t or other such raw<br />

material or secondary material, an advance evaluation of labor safety<br />

and environmental impact is carried out, based on the material safety<br />

data sheet (MSDS). <strong>Mazda</strong> is committed to the elim<strong>in</strong>ation or<br />

reduction <strong>in</strong> use of dangerous chemicals, and to f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g alternatives<br />

where possible.<br />

PRTR (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register)<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g FY 2004, <strong>Mazda</strong> used a total of 23 substances requir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

report<strong>in</strong>g under the terms of the PRTR. Production totals <strong>in</strong>creased by<br />

around 0.2% dur<strong>in</strong>g this fiscal year, but <strong>Mazda</strong> was able to reduce the<br />

quantities of pollutants emitted <strong>in</strong>to the air and water systems by<br />

around 15% (see pages 81-84 for details).<br />

Prevent<strong>in</strong>g wastewater pollution<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> draws no subsurface water for <strong>in</strong>dustrial usage, recogniz<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

this can lead to subsidence problems, and <strong>in</strong>stead receives a regular<br />

volume of <strong>in</strong>dustrial water. The Miyoshi Prov<strong>in</strong>g Grounds collects ra<strong>in</strong><br />

water for a variety of uses, along with other measures designed to<br />

improve utilization efficiency of water resources. <strong>Mazda</strong> has def<strong>in</strong>ed its<br />

own standards, which are stricter than the legal regulations <strong>in</strong> regard to<br />

wastewater pollution, and clears these standards by an ample marg<strong>in</strong>.<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> also processes its wastewater appropriately accord<strong>in</strong>g to orig<strong>in</strong>,<br />

by separat<strong>in</strong>g wastewater from process<strong>in</strong>g systems, domestic-hygiene<br />

systems, etc., as shown below.<br />

Prevention of atmospheric pollution<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> has def<strong>in</strong>ed its own standards for regulat<strong>in</strong>g emissions of SOx (sulfur<br />

oxide), NOx (nitrogen oxides), dust, ground waste and mist, as well as<br />

hydrocarbons and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which are stricter than<br />

the legal regulations <strong>in</strong> regard to atmospheric pollution, and is clear<strong>in</strong>g these<br />

standards through the <strong>in</strong>stallation of removal equipment, low-impact facilities,<br />

and strict day-to-day controls. (For detailed emissions data, see pages 81-84.)<br />

Prevention of sensory pollution<br />

Noise, vibration, odors and other aspects that affect the senses can upset<br />

people's sense of wellbe<strong>in</strong>g even if fall<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the boundaries of legal<br />

requirements. <strong>Mazda</strong> is well aware of this fact, and <strong>in</strong> order to live <strong>in</strong><br />

cooperation with the local community, is committed to clean<strong>in</strong>g up the<br />

sources of pollution, and implement<strong>in</strong>g plans to take measures aga<strong>in</strong>st noise<br />

and odors.<br />

Other environmental measures<br />

<strong>Mazda</strong> is <strong>in</strong> the process of elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g all chlor<strong>in</strong>e-based substances from the<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g oils used <strong>in</strong> the mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g process plants. In addition, <strong>Mazda</strong> abides<br />

strictly by the legal regulations relat<strong>in</strong>g to waste process<strong>in</strong>g and clean<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

currently stores PCB (polychlor<strong>in</strong>ated biphenyl) for use as <strong>in</strong>sulation oil for its<br />

condensers. As of the end of FY 2004, <strong>Mazda</strong> stored 439 units of PCB.<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g preserve the natural environment<br />

The Miyoshi Prov<strong>in</strong>g Ground is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a plan to restore the scenic<br />

beauty and riverhead functions of an extensive region of mounta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

and forest damaged by p<strong>in</strong>e weevils. 22 hectares of land will be<br />

covered through FY 2007, and some 15 hectares have been completed<br />

as of the end of FY 2004.<br />

Our Hokkaido Kenbuchi Prov<strong>in</strong>g Ground, which handles R&D <strong>in</strong>to<br />

technology and safety for frigid climates, operates under self-imposed<br />

regulations limit<strong>in</strong>g development and use to about 50 days <strong>in</strong> the<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter, to m<strong>in</strong>imize impact on the natural environment.<br />
