Message from the president <strong>Mazda</strong> developed its Millennium Plan to achieve "Product-Driven Growth," and the success of new-generation products start<strong>in</strong>g with the <strong>Mazda</strong>6(Atenza) has fueled our growth <strong>in</strong> the global marketplace. In November 2004 we announced the outl<strong>in</strong>e of our long-term corporate vision for the com<strong>in</strong>g decade, along with the "<strong>Mazda</strong> Momentum" mid-term management plan designed to lay the foundation for <strong>full</strong>-scale growth <strong>in</strong> the future. We have taken a large step toward the realization of our goals. The outl<strong>in</strong>e of the long-term vision clearly positions corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a key foundation of the company. <strong>Mazda</strong> has always worked toward a susta<strong>in</strong>able society, tak<strong>in</strong>g a lead<strong>in</strong>g and strategic role <strong>in</strong> resolv<strong>in</strong>g a host of related issues as an automobile manufacturer, especially <strong>in</strong> environmental protection. In December 2004 we established the CSR Committee at <strong>Mazda</strong> to better direct our efforts. The immediate tasks are to ensure a deeper, groupwide understand<strong>in</strong>g of what CSR means to <strong>Mazda</strong>. We believe that CSR demands a deep understand<strong>in</strong>g of the demands of society and the current situation, and work<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d solutions through <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> technology and organization. We strive first to understand precisely what our stakeholders need, and then to expla<strong>in</strong> ourselves completely and factually from that understand<strong>in</strong>g. This report provides as much <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion as possible, <strong>in</strong> a readily understandable <strong>format</strong>, to our customers, the local community, employees, shareholders and other stakeholders. One important part of this corporate activity is the revision of the <strong>Mazda</strong> Global Environmental Charter spell<strong>in</strong>g out our environmental policy, <strong>in</strong> April 2005. The Charter now specifies that the entire Group will cooperate <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g these goals. The older <strong>Mazda</strong> Global Environmental Conference was replaced <strong>in</strong> July 2005 by the <strong>Mazda</strong> Environment Committee to promote these activities while <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g a global perspective. We are committed to the "One <strong>Mazda</strong>" stance, with all employees <strong>in</strong> Japan and around the world work<strong>in</strong>g toward a common goal. We are advanc<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Mazda</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Leader Development(MBLD) program <strong>in</strong> human development, help<strong>in</strong>g all employees share a common understand<strong>in</strong>g of company goals and work toward those goals <strong>in</strong> their jobs. As we enter our second period of corporate growth we are revolutioniz<strong>in</strong>g ourselves with a new sense of unity. This report provides as much <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion as possible, <strong>in</strong> a readily understandable <strong>format</strong>, to our customers, local community, employees, shareholders and other stakeholders. In spite of report<strong>in</strong>g our fourth consecutive quarter of <strong>in</strong>creased revenues and profits, we also experienced the Uj<strong>in</strong>a No. 1 Plant fire, and the occurrence of and responses to that fire are also covered. We wish once aga<strong>in</strong> to express our s<strong>in</strong>cere apologies to all those affected by the fire, and hope that through this report you will better understand our efforts <strong>in</strong> health and safety, the environment, products, service, contribution to society, compliance and other CSR-related issues. <strong>Mazda</strong> Motor is determ<strong>in</strong>ed to cont<strong>in</strong>ue its commitment to these issues as a foundation for the future.
