3. Methodology<br />

3.1. Survey and sample profile<br />

The data for this study was obtained from the company survey carried out during the<br />

period of October-December 2007 in Croatia. The questionnaire was sent by mail to 644<br />

leading manufacturers in the manufacturing industry - sector D following the NACE<br />

classification (NKD, 2002). The manufacturing firms were identified using the database of<br />

the Croatian Chamber of Economy. A total of 210 completed questionnaires were obtained,<br />

producing a response rate of 33%. The questionnaire included basic information about the<br />

companies, firms’ financials taken from balance sheet and income statements, information<br />

on technologies, R&D, innovation activities, business organization and market-related data<br />

as well. Summary statistics on sampled manufacturing firms is presented in table 1 and<br />

table 2.<br />
