Romania is actively integrated into the European economical environment, as reflected by<br />

the distribution of FDI per countries of origin (exports and imports). In 2007 the largest<br />

foreign investments were attracted from Austria (21.4% from total), Netherlands (16.3%),<br />

Germany (11.7%), France (8.8%) and Greece (7.5%) (figure 3).<br />

In terms of sector attractiveness, most of the FDI was directed toward banking, construction,<br />

telecommunications, retail distribution networks, the manufacture of transport vehicles and<br />

spare parts, as well as to strategic areas such as the energy and oil sectors.<br />

2. Drivers for FDI in Romania<br />

The significant stabilization of the macroeconomic environment stimulated by the EU<br />

convergence process and the gradual harmonization of the legal and institutional framework<br />

have played an important role in facilitating the major improvement of the operating<br />

environment in Romania.<br />

Also, when considering Romania as a possible location for developing their businesses,<br />

foreign investors take into consideration the advantages provided by our country.<br />

Accordingly with the Romanian Agency of Foreign Investment (ARIS) these advantages<br />

can be grouped as follows:<br />
