It will occasion surprise in some quarters to be told that there is an un wrought
field in Scotch Church History, a field which has just been opened by Mr. Henderson.
Yet such is the case. We can remember no book devoted to the topic which Mr.
Henderson handles with such ease and power. Ecclesiastical discussions without
number we have read, but we have never had a volume in our hands which reviewed
the various important theological controversies waged within the Churches of Scot
land. It has been read by us with genuine enjoyment and appreciation.
Many histories of the Reformation have been written, and some of the Counter-
Reformation. Of the New Reformation only one man seems to have really qualified
himself yet to be the historian. . . . The movements which Mr. Bain describes are
but of yesterday. But he describes them as a historian, verifying his results with
care, writing with ease and dignity. Expository Times.
An excellent book. Mr. Bain does not obscure his vision by the bitterness
which is too common among Protestants, and his book is, for that reason and others,
one that we heartily recommend. Method!xt Tune*.
