The Asia-Pacific Forum for Envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>and</strong> Development, Phase II (<str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> II) for <strong>2005</strong>–2010 was<br />

supported by both the Ministry of the Envir<strong>on</strong>ment, Japan <strong>and</strong> 25 leading <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment–sustainable<br />

development experts, selected from countries within Asia <strong>and</strong> the Pacific.*1 The projects c<strong>on</strong>tained in this<br />

“<str<strong>on</strong>g>Booklet</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Good</strong> <strong>Practices</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Innovative</strong> <strong>Activities</strong> (<strong>2005</strong>–2009)” either received support from the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Showcase Programme or received the Ryutaro Hashimoto <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Award in dem<strong>on</strong>strating excellence in<br />

pursuit of sustainable development in the regi<strong>on</strong>. Overall running of the Showcase Programme <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Awards received much inspirati<strong>on</strong>al input <strong>and</strong> guidance from the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> members.<br />

Special appreciati<strong>on</strong> is expressed to the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> members who served <strong>on</strong> the Award Selecti<strong>on</strong> Committee<br />

<strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Showcase Panel. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Award Selecti<strong>on</strong> Committee was chaired throughout 2006–2009<br />

by Yoriko Kawaguchi <strong>and</strong> its members were Cielito Habito, Emil Salim, Reza Makno<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Hans van Ginkel<br />

(2006–2007), <strong>and</strong> Sanit Aksornkoae, Vinya S. Ariyaratne, Myung-Ja Kim <strong>and</strong> Yuqing Wang (2008–2009).<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Showcase Panel was chaired by Akio Morishima for 2006–2010, <strong>and</strong> its members were<br />

Myung-Ja Kim, Parvez Hassan, T<strong>on</strong>groj Onchan <strong>and</strong> Vinya S. Ariyaratne (2006–2007), Cielito Habito, Emil<br />

Salim Parvez Hassan <strong>and</strong> Reza Makno<strong>on</strong> (2008–2009), <strong>and</strong> Cielito Habito, Emil Salim, Sanit Aksornkoae<br />

<strong>and</strong> Parvez Hassan (2010). Particularly noteworthy support for the Showcase Programme came from<br />

United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Envir<strong>on</strong>ment Programme–Regi<strong>on</strong>al Office for Asia <strong>and</strong> the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP), headed<br />

formerly by Surendra Shrestha <strong>and</strong> thereafter by Young-Woo Park.<br />

Support for Showcase project evaluati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Award project case studies came from a wide range of<br />

partners, particularly the members of NetRes (the Asia–Pacific Regi<strong>on</strong>al Network of Policy Research<br />

Institutes for Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Management <strong>and</strong> Sustainable Development) menti<strong>on</strong>ed in the subsequent<br />

secti<strong>on</strong> of the overview.<br />

Gratitude is also extended to all colleagues <strong>and</strong> partners who c<strong>on</strong>tributed manuscripts to this booklet.<br />

Most importantly, we would like to express our deepest respect to all those who have supported the<br />

exemplary projects highlighted in this booklet, in both dem<strong>on</strong>strating <strong>and</strong> sharing their wisdom <strong>and</strong><br />

compassi<strong>on</strong> towards sustainable development.<br />
