Background - Problems Addressed <strong>and</strong> Policy Resp<strong>on</strong>ses<br />

The Misogi River, which is located in <strong>on</strong>e of the urban<br />

development areas of Nanao City, is polluted, <strong>and</strong> every<br />

summer it has an usual odour. It is very important, therefore,<br />

to improve the envir<strong>on</strong>mental c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of the river to enable<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinued urban development of the area.<br />

Cleaning the Misogi River<br />

Project Outline - Objectives <strong>and</strong> <strong>Activities</strong><br />

The purpose of this project is to cleanse the polluted river <strong>and</strong> to implement urban development through<br />

the creati<strong>on</strong> of a water-depurati<strong>on</strong> system <strong>and</strong> various activities related to urban development.<br />

Impacts <strong>and</strong> Achievements<br />

Achievements realized through the project are: (1) increased harm<strong>on</strong>y between the people of the city <strong>and</strong><br />

the river, <strong>and</strong> (2) the successful cleaning of the river water by local companies.<br />

Future Challenges<br />

The future challenges are: (1) to create an intern programme in Noto by which students can join various<br />

companies to resolve several envir<strong>on</strong>mental <strong>and</strong> community-development issues in Noto; (2) to implement<br />

social enterprises via exchange students; <strong>and</strong> (3) fundraising for development <strong>and</strong> improvement of the<br />

community.<br />
