Multi-stakeholder Partnership Building to Promote Educati<strong>on</strong><br />

for Sustainable Development<br />

Background - Problems Addressed <strong>and</strong> Policy Resp<strong>on</strong>ses<br />

Sustainability, within the c<strong>on</strong>text of rapid socio-ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

transformati<strong>on</strong>, needs to be further mainstreamed to raise<br />

public awareness <strong>and</strong> prompt behavioural changes. As part<br />

of the UN Decade of Educati<strong>on</strong> for Sustainable Development<br />

of <strong>2005</strong> -2014 initiative, it is intended to strengthen the policy,<br />

instituti<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong> programmatic framework in M<strong>on</strong>golia in<br />

order to promote educati<strong>on</strong> in sustainability.<br />

Project Outline - Objectives <strong>and</strong> <strong>Activities</strong><br />

To forge social capacity <strong>on</strong> ESD*, it was proposed to (i) promote multi-stakeholder policy dialogue <strong>on</strong><br />

developing social capacity to undertake ESD, (ii) c<strong>on</strong>duct assessment of ESD activities particularly in<br />

higher educati<strong>on</strong>, (iii) develop a nati<strong>on</strong>al acti<strong>on</strong> plan <strong>on</strong> ESD, (iv) support ESD curriculum development<br />

for higher educati<strong>on</strong>, (v) establish a nati<strong>on</strong>al network of educati<strong>on</strong>al instituti<strong>on</strong>s for promoting ESD, (vi)<br />

promote media campaigns <strong>and</strong> (vii) undertake pilot activities for ESD activities at the Nati<strong>on</strong>al park <strong>and</strong><br />

tourist camps.<br />

Impacts <strong>and</strong> Achievements<br />

Multi-stakeholder dialogues were c<strong>on</strong>vened <strong>and</strong> a Nati<strong>on</strong>al Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan <strong>on</strong> ESD was developed; Gaps<br />

<strong>and</strong> challenges were clarified through a questi<strong>on</strong>naire survey; A network of universities <strong>and</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

instituti<strong>on</strong>s was established; The H<strong>and</strong>book for Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Auditing was published <strong>and</strong> Envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

Management for Enterprises <strong>and</strong> Business Entities documentati<strong>on</strong> was developed; The Club of<br />

Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Journalists was established to promote media coverage <strong>and</strong> awareness-raising; Reporting<br />

the Envir<strong>on</strong>ment: A H<strong>and</strong>book for Journalists was translated into M<strong>on</strong>golian <strong>and</strong> published; Workshops<br />

were held <strong>and</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al panels were set up in Khustai <strong>and</strong> Terelj Nati<strong>on</strong>al parks.<br />

Future Challenges<br />

Further efforts are required to transform policy documents <strong>and</strong> training materials into c<strong>on</strong>crete activities to<br />

bring about a sustainability-oriented mindset; Knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience in sustainability issues needs to<br />

be recognized as an asset for those seek employment opportunities; Impacts of ESD <strong>on</strong> human behaviour<br />

<strong>and</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental performance need to be discerned via numerical indicators; Pilot waste-water recycling<br />

<strong>and</strong> organic fertilising projects need to be further pursued at the Nati<strong>on</strong>al park <strong>and</strong> campsites.<br />
