Ishikawa Forest Supporters Club<br />
This club works with volunteers in the Noto, Kanazawa <strong>and</strong> Kaga areas in activities that include forest<br />
c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>, such as clearing away underbrush, cropping <strong>and</strong> cutting branches, as well as capacity<br />
development via educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> disseminati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Seiko Eco Project – Aiming to Be the World’s Top Eco School<br />
Ishikawa Prefecture Daiseiji High School<br />
2006<br />
In 2002 Daiseiji High School initiated the Seiko Eco Project in order to tackle envir<strong>on</strong>mental issues as a<br />
school <strong>and</strong> to solve the problem of an unkempt forest due to aging of the forest workforce. One of the<br />
projects has targeted a yearly reducti<strong>on</strong> in CO 2 of 5% <strong>and</strong> another aims to support forest management.<br />
As of 2008, the project had reduced the usage of electricity, water <strong>and</strong> paper, as well as amount of waste<br />
by 15%-47%. The volunteers also tidied up a 100 ha forest.<br />
Countering Global Warming through Financial Business Operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Noto Kyoei Shinkin Bank<br />
Noto Kyoei Shinkin Bank created a fixed-deposit financial product, the Noto Credit Eco Plan, to<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tribute to <strong>and</strong> invest in CO 2 Reducti<strong>on</strong>, CO 2 Sequestering <strong>and</strong> Forest C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>. More than<br />
800 families have invested in the product, which is presently valued at around 2 billi<strong>on</strong> JPY. Over 10<br />
milli<strong>on</strong> JPY of this was released for utilisati<strong>on</strong> in forest management <strong>and</strong> awareness raising in the local<br />
community. Noto Kyoei Shinkin Bank was officially certified by Ishikawa Prefecture for its activities in<br />
absorbing 37.5 t<strong>on</strong>s of CO 2 .<br />
Duck P<strong>on</strong>d Rice Paddy Club<br />
Kaga-City Rice Paddy Observatory Club<br />
The Duck P<strong>on</strong>d Rice Paddy Club started its activities in 1996. They educate the local community in the<br />
benefits of traditi<strong>on</strong>al rice paddy management, pesticide-free farming <strong>and</strong> organic rice farming for<br />
biodiversity <strong>and</strong> health. This style of farming also involves using the paddies as a winter resting area to<br />
increase the populati<strong>on</strong>s of duck <strong>and</strong> wild geese. C<strong>on</strong>tracts with farmers have assisted in sales of “duck<br />
rice”, <strong>and</strong> profits have been utilised to cover the running costs of the club.<br />
