Programme Operati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Achievements<br />

Thematic Area of Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase projects<br />

In order to strengthen a focus of the programmes <strong>on</strong> priority thematic areas of <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g>, more weight<br />

was given to the projects since 2008 that address climate change, 3Rs <strong>and</strong> biodiversity without<br />

excluding other sectoral or cross-cutting project proposals.*3 In the aggregated portfolio of the<br />

Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase from <strong>2005</strong>–2009, 75 projects address <strong>on</strong>e or more priority thematic areas.<br />

The priority policy areas designati<strong>on</strong> corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to internati<strong>on</strong>al envir<strong>on</strong>mental policy processes<br />

such as the United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Framework C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Climate Change (UNFCCC), Asia 3R Forum<br />

<strong>and</strong> the C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Biological Diversity (CBD). Other than these priority thematic areas, <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase projects address water, capacity development <strong>and</strong> other sectoral or crosscutting<br />

issues as expressed in “Others”. “Others” refer to, for instance, envir<strong>on</strong>mental governance/<br />

policies, envir<strong>on</strong>mental infrastructure/building, envir<strong>on</strong>mental finance, urban/rural development, social<br />

development <strong>and</strong> awareness-raising.<br />

raising).<br />

- Regarding thematic areas, multiple answers are allowed.<br />

Out of 75 projects, 43 (57.3%) have multiple comp<strong>on</strong>ents addressing more than <strong>on</strong>e thematic area,<br />

<strong>and</strong> various combinati<strong>on</strong>s of multiple thematic areas can be found in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase<br />

Programme projects. Co-benefit or multi-benefit approaches are comm<strong>on</strong>ly applied, such as those<br />

that address climate change, biodiversity <strong>and</strong> ecosystem, or climate change <strong>and</strong> the 3Rs. Poverty<br />

eradicati<strong>on</strong>, income generati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> community empowerment are prevalent factors of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase Programme projects.<br />
