Programme Operati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Achievements<br />

Overview<br />

The Asia-Pacific Forum for Envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>and</strong> Development (<str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g>) was launched as a regi<strong>on</strong>al group<br />

of prominent experts in 2001 to address critical issues <strong>and</strong> to propose new models for equitable <strong>and</strong><br />

sustainable development. In its sec<strong>on</strong>d phase (<str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> II), which commenced in <strong>2005</strong>, the following<br />

Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase Programme were carried out as a major part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> II activities.*1.<br />

Background of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Award <strong>and</strong> Showcase Programme<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Award<br />

The Ryutaro Hashimoto <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Award for <strong>Good</strong> <strong>Practices</strong> was launched in 2006 as a part of the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> II Knowledge Initiative Programme to acknowledge the exemplary practices in promoting<br />

sustainable development in Asia <strong>and</strong> the Pacific. Over the 2006–2009 period, 217 projects were<br />

submitted for the Award selecti<strong>on</strong> process <strong>and</strong> Award prizes were given to 27 projects in total. IGES<br />

spearheaded case studies of the winning projects in collaborati<strong>on</strong> with the member organisati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of the Asia-Pacific Regi<strong>on</strong>al Network of Research Instituti<strong>on</strong>s for Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Management<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sustainable Development (NetRes), or alternatively, local experts with the view to facilitating<br />

the disseminati<strong>on</strong> of knowledge <strong>and</strong> expertise <strong>on</strong> innovative practices for achieving sustainable<br />

development <strong>and</strong> their potential replicati<strong>on</strong> across the regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Showcase Programme<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Showcase Programme is designed to enable local stakeholders to promote innovati<strong>on</strong> in<br />

policy development, technology applicati<strong>on</strong>, social mobilizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> partnership building for achieving<br />

sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific regi<strong>on</strong>. The Showcase Programme was commenced with two<br />

test projects in <strong>2005</strong> <strong>and</strong> was launched as a full programme in 2006.<br />

The Showcase Programme has been supported by the Ministry of Envir<strong>on</strong>ment Japan. The United<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>s Envir<strong>on</strong>ment Programme-Regi<strong>on</strong>al Office for Asia <strong>and</strong> the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP) has been<br />

coordinating its operati<strong>on</strong>s as the Showcase Facility Secretariat. Under the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Showcase Programme,<br />

a grant of up to 30,000 USD is provided to support a selected project in Asia <strong>and</strong> the Pacific. UNEP/ROAP,<br />

together with IGES, supports the selecti<strong>on</strong> process with the <str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> Showcase Panel that c<strong>on</strong>sists of five<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>APFED</str<strong>on</strong>g> members. A NetRes member provides technical guidance for each of the projects, <strong>and</strong> m<strong>on</strong>itors<br />

<strong>and</strong> evaluates the projects. With the applicati<strong>on</strong>s for the 2010 Showcase Programme, the total number<br />

of applicati<strong>on</strong>s came to 978, <strong>and</strong> 59 projects in 20 countries were selected from <strong>2005</strong> to 2010. Climate<br />

change, 3R <strong>and</strong> Biodiversity are designated as priority thematic areas while water <strong>and</strong> other cross-cutting<br />

projects have also been supported. (The following figures <strong>and</strong> table show the total number of selected<br />

projects from <strong>2005</strong> to 2009.)<br />
