<strong>Trails</strong><br />

St<strong>and</strong>ards - Acquisition:<br />

1. Careful consideration shall be given to the type, location, <strong>and</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> trailway<br />

corridors acquired by the <strong>City</strong> to insure that the <strong>City</strong>’s comprehensive trail<br />

systems will satisfy the recreational <strong>and</strong> transportation needs <strong>of</strong> the residents on<br />

both a neighborhood <strong>and</strong> community-wide basis.<br />

2. L<strong>and</strong> for multi-purpose trailways (MPTWs) shall be acquired primarily through<br />

right-<strong>of</strong>-way dedication <strong>and</strong> development related street construction, dedication<br />

<strong>of</strong> greenway or other <strong>of</strong>f-street trailway corridors, purchase, eminent domain or<br />

donation. Trail acquisition through subdivisions shall be by means <strong>of</strong> dedication<br />

<strong>of</strong> outlots. Acquisition <strong>of</strong> less than fee simple interests such as easements or<br />

leases shall be undertaken whenever appropriate.<br />

3. Acquisition <strong>of</strong> trailway corridors shall take into account privately<br />

owned/maintained facilities <strong>and</strong> related destinations which should be included in<br />

the comprehensive trail system so as to avoid any duplication <strong>and</strong> to conserve<br />

financial resources.<br />

Policies - Acquisition:<br />

1. Assure adequate public right-<strong>of</strong>-way is provided <strong>and</strong> dedicated for sidewalks <strong>and</strong><br />

trails during the subdivision process.<br />

2. In cases where the <strong>City</strong> must pursue direct acquisition, finances may come from<br />

donations, park dedication funds, capital improvement program, bond issuance<br />

<strong>and</strong> by grant programs when appropriate.<br />

3. All trail acquisitions shall be reviewed by the <strong>Parks</strong>, Recreation <strong>and</strong> Natural<br />

Resources Advisory Committee <strong>and</strong> they shall make recommendations on such<br />

matters to the <strong>City</strong> Council.<br />

4. Trail corridors that divide long blocks in residential subdivisions, provide access<br />

to parks, MPTWs or other public areas will be dedicated as outlots. Developers<br />

shall be responsible for installation <strong>of</strong> trails in corridors to prescribed<br />

specifications.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ards - Trail Development:<br />

1. The <strong>City</strong> shall create <strong>and</strong> maintain an attractive, diverse, <strong>and</strong> interesting system<br />

<strong>of</strong> urban <strong>and</strong> rural trails including, but not limited to, natural trails, sidewalks,<br />

multi-purpose trailways, hiking paths, snowmobile trails, cross-country ski trails,<br />

<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lakeville</strong>, Minnesota<br />
