StoreFront 5.0 which resides on the server that hosts your web. You will be prompted to enter the information for the database connection when you first open one of the StoreFront development tools. After the connection is established for one tool, all additional tools opened will use the same connection. Closing all the tools will clear the connection and allow you to choose a new connection when you next open one of the StoreFront development tools. CONNECTING TO A REMOTE OR LOCAL DATABASE The method by which you connect to your database will differ depending on whether your site is hosted on a remote server or whether it is currently being developed on your local desktop machine. Follow the instructions below to use the Database Connection Dialog Box to connect to a remote or local database. Note: your host must perform the MSADC configuration before you will be able to connect to a remote database with the StoreFront client tools. 1. The first option on the Database Connection Dialog Box is the Connection List. StoreFront can save up to 5 different database connections, conveniently allowing you to connect to different webs in succession. Select Connection1 to save this connection. You can retrieve it at any time in the future by selecting Connection1. 2. If the database you are trying to connect to is located in a web site that is hosted 22
User Guide locally, on the same machine you are working at, leave Use Remote Database Connection unchecked. If your site is hosted on a remote web server, check Use Remote Database Connection. 3. Check Use datahandler. If you encounter an error message referring to a datahandler or RDS datahandler, uncheck this option and try again. 4. If the database you are trying to connect to is hosted locally on the same machine you are working at, enter localhost or 127.0.0.1 in the Host field. If your site is hosted on a remote server, enter the IP or domain name of the site in the Host field. 5. In the DSN field, enter the System DSN that points to your database. If the site is hosted on a remote server, your web host should be able to provide you with this information. If this site is hosted locally, on the same machine where you are working, then you should be able to view and create DSNs yourself. DSN creation is described in steps 4 through 7 of Creating a Local StoreFront Web, page 46. 6. Select Access or SQL according to the database type that you are connecting to. 7. If you are connecting to an Access database, leave Logon Required unchecked and ignore the User Name and Password fields. Click Test Connection to test the connection to your database. If the test is successful, click Connect. 8. If you are connecting to a SQL database, check Logon Required and enter your SQL Server logon and password. Your host will be able to provide you with this information if you do not know it. Click Connect to connect to your database. USING A CUSTOM CONNECTION STRING If you prefer not to use the default connection methods used by the StoreFront development tools or if your host does not support system DSNs, you may choose to use a custom connection string instead. A connection string should contain all of the parameters required by ADO for your database type. Please be aware that StoreFront Support can not assist in the composition of a custom connection string 23
