Program, ca. 1961 through 1975, the VAB has since gained importance in the context of the
Space Shuttle program, ca. 1969 to 2010. The period of significance for the VAB is from 1980,
when the first Space Shuttle vehicle was assembled, through 2010, the designated end of the
Space Shuttle Program. The Space Shuttle Program is the longest running American space
program to date. Unlike the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, the emphasis was on cost
effectiveness and reusability, as well as the construction of a space station. The VAB is a unique
facility, which supports the integration and stacking of the complete Space Shuttle vehicle on the
Mobile Launcher Platform. Under Criterion C, the VAB contains four large high bays; two of
which contain a platform system designed for the size of the Space Shuttle vehicle, and two that
contain platforms shaped around the ET. Each system contains a combination of stationary and
moveable platforms, set at various levels, which provide access to specific components. In
addition, the VAB is one of the world’s largest buildings by volume at 129,428,000 cubic ft. The
VAB is of exceptional importance to the Space Shuttle Program, and because it is less than 50
years in age, Criteria Consideration G applies.

setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
