DESIGNSTRATEGIES D.3.aD.3.bD.3.cD.3.dD.3.eD.3.fD.3.gD.3.hD.3.iPromote the development and management <strong>of</strong> transportation corridors as greenways, that have the appearance <strong>of</strong> parkways andboulevards.Encourage the retention and use <strong>of</strong> vegetated buffers to reduce stormwater run<strong>of</strong>f from highways and parking lots, lessen air qualityimpacts, and to serve as noise barriers along high-volume highways and rail corridors.Encourage communities to require the reservation <strong>of</strong> planting strips <strong>of</strong> sufficient width for street trees in plans for new streets androads approved under local subdivision and land development review provisions.Redesign curb cuts and improve sidewalk conditions to facilitate movement <strong>of</strong> wheelchair-assisted travelers, particularly near transitstops. Insure compliance <strong>of</strong> “as built” conditions with ADA guidelines. Utilize the most effective crosswalk designs based on industryresearch.Work with communities to implement traffic-calming measures where appropriate to slow traffic speeds in built-up areas.
