December 2012AGE STRUCTURERhode Island’s population is aging. During the next twenty years of the new millennium, the number of Rhode Islanders 65 years and older is projected toincrease by more than half (53.9 percent), from 151,881 in 2010 to 233,749 in 2030. Representing 14.4 percent of the state’s population in 2010, persons 65and older will account for 20.5 percent of Rhode Island residents in 2030. One segment of the elderly population of significant interest because of increasedcosts associated with older age is the frail elderly (ages 85 and older), whose population is expected to increase by 5.4 percent between 2010 and 2030.During those same years, the working age population (15-64) is expected to decline by 3.8 percent. Representing 68.3 percent of the population in 2010, thisage group will decline to 60.7 percent by 2030.HOUSEHOLDSThe number of households increased at twice the rate of the population between 1980 and 2010, growing by 22.2 percent while the population grew at 11.1percent.
