December 2012PUBLIC TRANSIT BUS ROUTESThe <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) serves 34 <strong>of</strong> 39 <strong>of</strong> the <strong>State</strong>’s cities and towns. As <strong>of</strong> September2012 RIPTA operates 3,105 daily weekday trips on 54 statewide fixed bus routes 5 days a week. The followingweekday transit routes are considered congested by RIPTA due to passengers being forced to stand andpassengers being left behind to wait for the next bus, mostly during peak hours.RIPTA’s heaviest weekday routes in terms <strong>of</strong> ridership are:• Route 11 Broad Street• Route 60 Providence/Newport• Route 31 Cranston Street• Route 99 North Main Street / Pawtucket• Route 56 Chalkstone AvenueRIPTA operates 1,799 Saturday trips on 46 statewide fixed bus routes that serve 28 <strong>of</strong> the <strong>State</strong>’s cities and towns.On Sundays, RIPTA operates 1,168 trips on 36 statewide fixed bus routes that serve 26 cities and towns.PARK N’ RIDE LOTSParking facilities for commuters,such as park and ride lots along busroutes and parking lots forcommuter rail, serve an importantfunction in travel. <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> has28 park and ride lots (serving bustransit as well as carpooling andintercity bus service), some <strong>of</strong> whichare monitored periodically forutilization. Conditions areconsidered congested at parkingfacilities where spaces in use exceed85 percent (practical capacity) <strong>of</strong> thetotal number <strong>of</strong> spaces. Four <strong>of</strong> thelots are at or above 85 percentcapacity (Congregational Church inBarrington, Routes 2 & 102 in NorthKingstown, Lincoln Mall, and Routes138 & US 1 in South Kingstown) asindicated in the table to the rightand should be consideredcandidates for expansion.
