December 2012and the Providence River dredging project are complete and ensure the continuity <strong>of</strong> multi-modal goods movement. The state should consider short-seashippingor “marine highway” options such as the Port Inland Distribution Network (PIDN) in conjunction with the Port Authority <strong>of</strong> New York and New Jerseyto divert containerized cargo from I-95. Continued coordination with regional groups such as North Atlantic <strong>Transportation</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Officials and New EnglandGovernors / Eastern Canadian Premiers <strong>Transportation</strong> Working Group will help realize these objectives.<strong>State</strong>wide <strong>Planning</strong> completed a Freight <strong>Planning</strong> Needs Assessment in 2006. This report describes freight activities occurring at the state and regional levelsand also describes staff needs with respect to training and modeling and outreach to the freight community and cities and towns through the comprehensiveplanning process.
