SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLEMENTATIONThe objective of the research project was to determine the material andmechanical properties of common wrought iron bridge members and develop somesuggested recommendations and repair techniques. To determine the properties of thehistoric wrought iron, a literary search was completed along with extensive materialstesting. The results from the literary search and materials testing were evaluated andcompared to develop a basic understanding of the material properties and behavior ofhistoric wrought iron. After determining these properties, different repair procedureswere also experimentally evaluated. Based upon information gathered through theexperimental testing, material properties, and literary search, a number of inspection andrepair recommendations were developed for implementation of the research.6.1 Summary6.1.1 Summary of Literature SearchAn in-depth literature search was completed to gather pertinent informationregarding the repair and rehabilitation of historic wrought iron bridges. A few articleswere found describing the rehabilitation of wrought iron bridges, but none of the articlesoutlined any specific repair procedures for wrought iron. Along with articles aboutspecific bridge rehabilitations, much information about wrought iron material propertiesand the manufacturing processes that were utilized to make the existing historic wrought
137iron bridges was also found. From this information a better understanding of the materialand structural properties of wrought iron was developed.Information and data were also collected from historical sources containingresults from tensile testing of wrought iron used for construction purposes during thenineteenth century. These sources included works from authors such as Kiraldy,Humber, and Beardslee. From these data it was found that the average tensile strength,yield strength, and percent elongation are 54,000 psi, 33,300 psi, 23.2%, respectively.These data were also compared to results found from experimental testing completed inthis study.Along with the literary search a survey was also prepared and distributed to StateDepartment of Transportations, State Local Technical Assistance Programs, IndianaCounty Engineers, and various engineering consultants to collect information on existingrepair and inspection procedures used for historic iron bridges. The results from thissurvey did not lead to any existing wrought iron bridge member repair procedures, but itdid lead to a better understanding of the need for more knowledge concerning thebehavior of historic wrought iron.6.1.2 Summary of Testing ResultsThe material testing completed in this research consisted of: micrographs,chemical analysis, hardness testing, tensile coupon testing, charpy impact testing, tensiletesting of eyebar end connections, and some limited fatigue testing.Specimens utilized in the testing for this study were machined from members oftwo different bridges, the Bell Ford Bridge in Jackson County, Indiana and the AdamsMill Covered Bridge in Carroll County, Indiana. The specimens from the Bell FordBridge were machined from eyebars that made up the bottom tension chord and were
