The Darle W. Dudley Award for<br />

Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Contributions to the<br />

Power Transmission <strong>and</strong> Gearing<br />

Community honors those who have<br />

made life-long contributions to the<br />

art <strong>and</strong> science of gear <strong>and</strong> power<br />

transmission technology. The award is named for Darle<br />

Dudley who represented the spirit of this award so well.<br />

Aizoh Kubo<br />

Kyoto University, Japan<br />

Biographical Description: Dr. Aizoh Kubo is a Professor<br />

Emeritus at Kyoto University, Japan. He serves on the Board of<br />

the Research Institute for Applied Sciences in Kyoto, Japan. Dr.<br />

Kubo is also the CEO of Kubo’s Gear Technologies Company.<br />

Dr. Kubo received his Ph.D. degree <strong>from</strong> Kyoto University in<br />

1971. He has served as a guest researcher at Stuttgart<br />

University <strong>and</strong> FZG, T.U. Muenchen in Germany. Since 1979,<br />

he has been a Professor in the Department of Precision<br />

Mechanics in Kyoto University until his retirement in 2007. His<br />

research focus has been on dynamics of high speed gearing;<br />

design <strong>and</strong> troubleshooting of gear failure, vibration, <strong>and</strong> noise<br />

issues; analysis of gear manufacturing processes; development<br />

of simulation tools, <strong>and</strong> development of measurement<br />

techniques for characterizing the geometry of machine parts.<br />

Dr. Kubo is a member of JSME <strong>and</strong> AGMA. He has served as<br />

the Head of the Japanese delegate to the ISO TC60 (1980-<br />

2009). He is also a member of the Gear Technical Committee of<br />

IFToMM, <strong>and</strong> has served as a Chair of that committee (1994-<br />

1997). He is also a past Chair of the Machine Design <strong>and</strong><br />

Tribology Division of JSME (1996-1997) as well as a past Chair<br />

of the the JSME Gear Committee RC-156. Dr. Kubo has served<br />

as the Secretary General of the MPT-91 <strong>and</strong> the Chairman of the<br />

MPT-2001 conferences (International Conference on Motion<br />

<strong>and</strong> Power Transmissions). He was a member of the Board of<br />

Excellence at the VDI Conference on Gears, 2010. Dr. Kubo is<br />

also the Head of the Gear Industry Society in Kansai district in<br />

Japan. Research papers authored by Dr. Kubo have received<br />

several JSME awards. His work on the Development of Design<br />

Methods of Railway Traction Drives received an Invention Prize<br />

<strong>from</strong> Japan Institute of Invention <strong>and</strong> Innovation. Dr. Kubo has<br />

also been active in ASME conferences, <strong>and</strong> delivered the<br />

Buckingham Lecture in the ASME/AGMA International<br />

Conference in 2003.<br />

Biographical Description: Noel Perkins is the Donald T.<br />

Greenwood Collegiate Professor of Engineering <strong>and</strong> an Arthur F.<br />

Thurnau Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of<br />

Michigan. He earned his Ph.D at U. C. Berkeley in 1986<br />

(Mechanical Engineering) prior to joining the faculty at Michigan.<br />

His research interests draw <strong>from</strong> the fields of computational,<br />

nonlinear <strong>and</strong> structural dynamics with applications to the<br />

mechanics of single molecule DNA <strong>and</strong> DNA/protein complexes,<br />

wireless inertial sensors for analyzing human motion, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

dynamics of cable structures, vehicle systems, <strong>and</strong> axially moving<br />

materials. He presently serves as the Editor of the ASME J.<br />

Vibration <strong>and</strong> Acoustics <strong>and</strong> has previously served in editorial<br />

capacities for the ASME J. Applied Mechanics (Associate Editor),<br />

the Journal of Vibration <strong>and</strong> Control (Member, Editorial Board),<br />

the International Journal of Non-linear Mechanics (Guest Editor),<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Journal of Sound <strong>and</strong> Vibration (Member, Editorial Board).<br />

He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,<br />

a recipient of the General Motors Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Distance Learning<br />

Faculty Award (twice), the Academic Challenge Award <strong>from</strong> the<br />

Technical University of Munich, the Amoco Undergraduate<br />

Teaching Award <strong>and</strong> several other teaching awards <strong>from</strong> the<br />

University of Michigan. He remains active in commercialization<br />

activities for MEMS-based sports training systems, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

founding partner of Cast Analysis, LLC that manufactures a fly<br />

casting training system.
