Waking DreamsVThe Shiva SutrasContemplate: “The cause of bondage issound.”In spiritual systems certain words areput together to represent somethingincomprehensible and beyond understanding.This leaves the impression that this “beyondunderstanding” thing or experience actuallyexists and actually is.These in-comprehend-able word-meaningsappear in a short form as a symbol or picturewhich tells a larger narrative.It is the belief that by understanding or throughgrasping these symbols and word-soundsfreedom from pain or enlightenment or selfrealizationor liberation will follow.Few can decipher the meaning of the soundsand word-symbols.169
Those that can decipher the meanings of wordsoundsand symbols are therefore labeled andbelieved to be higher then those who cannotdecipher the word-sound meanings.The meaning of these symbols are thereforelabeled sacred and those who can decipherthem are attributed certain status with magicalpowers.This miss-conception keeps the power of wordsoundsand symbols within a spiritual systemsacred, as if it can only be had by a privilegedfew.This represents the perceivable universe.Which without sounds, words or concepts anda perceiver are not.The mind is an illusion of words and soundsin which words and sounds solidifies and reenforcesthe perceivable.The words unperceivable or unperceivableuniverse, or beyond the mind, or a universebeyond is also granted the illusion of isness,beingness and existence.Even the word non-existence gives the illusionthat nonexistence actually exists and is.All of this belongs to the illusion of isnesscontained within words and sounds.170
