8. Apparently, no one in uniform has taken any precautionary defensive measures such aspointing a weapon toward those who are about to be “buried alive”. In addition, one candetect no sign <strong>of</strong> coercion on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “Japanese” men, and an impression is that <strong>the</strong>five persons are even voluntarily entering <strong>the</strong> pit. Based on this analysis, one could conclude that this is a composite picture thatcombined <strong>the</strong> photograph <strong>of</strong> a pit and an earth mound, that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men marked withthrough , and that <strong>of</strong> those who look like Japanese military men in <strong>the</strong> background.One cannot accept this photograph as au<strong>the</strong>ntic evidence <strong>of</strong> an atrocity in view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>sepoints <strong>of</strong> skepticism.Some publications accusatory <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Nanking</strong> massacre have used Photo 10 alongwith Photo 11, which shows some individuals identical with those on Photo 10. Photo11 is <strong>of</strong>ten captioned as a scene <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> victims who were allowed to smoke immediatelybefore <strong>the</strong>ir live burial.Photo 11: This photograph also appeared for <strong>the</strong> first time in RBS.
