BahadoriSummary:Today, Distribution Electric Companies, in order to increase efficiency and reliability inDistribution Networks and also to decrease maintenance and operation costs, arelooking to utilize Distribution Automation Systems. It is clear that achieving aneffective DAS do need a reliable and fast enough telecommunication network.Simplicity of installation and operation of Radio Links and also its lower prices makethe Radio links much more advantageous than other telecommunication systems.Considering obvious advantages and applications of Radio systems, Niroo ResearchInstitute has designed and implemented a Radio Modem in UHF frequency band. Mostof Radio Modem parameters as Frequency, Transmitter Output Power and Modem DataRate can be set through software. Thanks to this feature, corresponding to eachapplication , according to permitted frequency, distance of transmitter and receiverterminals, geographical conditions and required bit rate, the Radio Modem parameterscan be set easily, set through software without any hardware modification and tuning.Further more, Reading out and changing the radio modem's parameters can be doneeasily by any standard serial port programs (Term 95, Hyper Terminal).The designed Radio Modem, successfully passed all functional tests , under normal andextreme test condition recommended by ETS300-086 standard and comply with allrequirements of this standard, also far distance test of this system have been donesuccessfully .Finally, NRM400 as semi-industrial Data Radio Modem in UHF frequency, with9600bps data rate and Half Duplex operation was introduced as a cost effectivealternative and appropriate substitute to other costly data transmission medias such ascable and fiber.NRM-400 has been designed specifically for the SCADA, telemetry point to point andpoint to multipoint applications.102
