NRIChemistry & Materials Research CenterProject Title:Determination of Optimum Coatings for GE-F5, TG20 andMW701B Gas Turbine Blades in Rey Power PlantDepartment: MetallurgyProject Manager: D. RezakhaniEmployer: Tehran Regional Electric Co. Project Code: PMTBT01Project Staff: A.A. Zhaam, M. Hirbod, A. Saboor, M. Alibabai, M.M. Khajavi,S. Ahangarani, A. Pasha, M. Ferdoosi, S. AfroukhtehSummary:First – stages of gas turbine blades are subject to severe thermomechanical cycles andoperate in corrosive environments that depend on the conditions of use. Protectivecoatings are required for turbine blades to provide resistance against oxidation and hotcorrosion. Development of corrosion–resistant coatings have led to a great variety ofcoatings, which include diffusion coatings, MCrAlY overlay coatings and ceramicthermal barrier coatings. Application techniques commonly used include packcementation, electron-beam physical vapor deposition and plasma spray. The operatingconditions, fuel type and its composition, inlet air Mechanical, mechanical design and… play important roles in selection of protective coatings for gas turbine blades. However, coating protection effects are manifested only if the coating has been chosencorrectly, both in terms of blade design and engine running conditions. In this project, the currently available coatings types and coating processes are studied.A list of commercially available, non-proprietary coatings are compiled based oninformation provided by major coating suppliers. The applicability and fieldperformance of the various available coatings with respect to corrosive environment, temperature, substrate alloy and turbine operation are studied in order to assist in theselection of coatings for specific applications. Finally as a case study, failure analysis ofcoatings on GE-F5, TG20 and MW701B gas turbine blades in Rey power plant areperformed and the mechanisms of failure, are recognized. Therefore optimum coatingsare determined and quality control procedures and inspection techniques for the selectedcoating types and processes are also discussed.115
