The elements of a magnetic tape recording and playback system, with detailsof the interior construction of a magnetic head.A magnetic head is designed to concentrate the magnetic field in the possiblesmallest region of tape, thus giving a high-recording density of maximum numberof wavelengths possible. To achieve these high densities, the head gap must bemade very small, in the order of 1 or 2 μm, which yields low output voltage andrequires very smooth tape surface and good contact between the head and thetape. The head cores are usually fabricated of Permalloy (80% Ni, 20% Fe) forhigh permeability and low-magnetic retention. In more recent times ceramic-likemagnets have been used for better wear and they do not require lamination.
